Creekbend thanks for reply unfortunately fire ants are all over us in central NC. I also could not imagine what kind off animal could go in and dig up a fire ant nest. I have heard about young cattle being killed by them. And have seen a few times what happens when a horse rolls on a nest, and its not pretty.
Dr_Zinj I have heard of nutria before mainly down east of here from farmers where we used to duck hunt.
( back before I had a daughter who has a horse and I could afford to hunt ducks ) I cant say I have ever seen one but guys down East swore they were the kiss of death to a impoundment.
F&G and ( Feds, Obama ) will have to catch me in the act.
Did I mention I am located in upstate NY
Thanks
Thanks for posting. I was unaware of the FireAnt introduction in Central NC. We live in Caswell County and I have heard of no outbreaks here in my area. I'll make a call to the County Extension Agent Monday. These Critters are a mess.

Bigger Snipes up North maybe mounting size. Come on up.!

A snipe is the size or smaller of a woodcock, which is smaller than a scrawny pigeon! Not much there- mounting- puff the feathers out like it's cold and they will look bigger!

Around here, muskrats are supersized rat size. They move slowly, their tale leaves a dragline and the prints are on either side of the line. They never do any harm- get hit crossing the road.

Animal life is what makes a habitat alive. Kill it off and you have a sterile mud pond like you find in polluted suburbs and cities. I always leave the wild life alone- they have it tough enough without worrying about me trying to destroy them or destroy where they live.

I enjoy the life around me.

Here's a map showing the distribution of imported fire ant infestations from Geographic Distribution of Fire Ants - eXtension

Fire ant map_0.JPG

Before my retirement, I was the PI on a research project that estimated the economic impact of imported fire ants on SC households. The estimated average annual expense for control and remediation was $86/household in 1998.
