<font color="red">The surface is a course sand about 3 1/2" deep.

A couple posts up rollerskate states that the arena is indeed sand.

You might find, like a lot of arena riders, that you are likely to ride in certain areas of the arena more than others. Reiners, cutters, dressage, pole benders, etc tend to push the sand around more than one would think. In my opinion its hard to redistribute that sand around with a chain harrow. One step better is a rotary harrow but something that has a more rigid length and width will do a better job.

When I bring in new sand I take a 4'x12' section of rigid welded fence, lay it down, weight it and drag that around. It does a great job of filling in the low spots. Might be a cheap and simple solution.

Great looking arena and a great looking location for an arena!

The ring is in a very convient place. The house at the far end is actually my neighbors place. We let her bring use the ring whenever she wants. She takes in retired horses for people. Not to many but she has fun with it and the horses get a nice place to stay.

We thought of stone dust. Checked some out but it seemed a bit dusty and it was very dark gray. I was concerned that during the summer months it would give off a lot of heat and that would not be good for the animals. It made me think of the difference between walking barefoot on asphalt versus concrete. We thought of mixing the sand and stone dust, which seemed really nice, but the contractor thought he would have a tough time actually mixing it. So we opted to go with just sand.

I guess stone dust is more firm but 6" seems awfully deep, at least for the riding my wife does. Which does remind me I am going to have to start thinking about making her some jumps.
