You can get a tool that holds the link and has a bar that sets against the pin and then you drive the pin out or rather back.
A punch will work but not as well.

I used chains on a car back in the 60's, on a 2WD pickup in the early 70's and on my first small 2WD tractor (Cub 154 LoBoy). In my limited experience with chains, I used quick links for fixing the side chains:

3/16" Zinc Plated Quick Link

For connecting the cross chains, these are available:

Medium Truck Cross Chain Hook - 2312

On the tractor I used springs as in the link below. I used two springs on each wheel and had extra S-hooks so each spring could catch the side chain at 3 places. The chains weren't tight on the tires but the tractor didn't go fast enough to cause any problems.

CENTURY SPRING CORP - Zinc Plated Screen Door Spring 3/8" OD x 16-3/8" Long #TV183;)

I have been using the slide chain fasteners that came with the chains. They have been rubbed up against many trees and rocks. Never lost a chain off the tire to date.

I also never used springs. Just throw them on. Drive around a bit then re tighten.
