Moss .. I'm leering at you. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Now that the poster can make up a reason for destroying turtles, he will.

Didn't sound like he was having a predation problem to me. If I was a gun enthusiast, and I'm not, this type of shyeet would piss me off.

Since were voicing opinions here, how long it takes one to get to 20 lbs is not the point IMO. You wanna harvest one for food - great. Baby ducks? Move the turtle, the ducks or both. Hard as it may be for some to realize, they serve just as much of a purpose as any other link in the chain.

Breaking the chain 'cause we can' is never a good idea.

These turtles will take over a pond.. my brotherinlaws caught over 50 in my parent's farm pond.. some were so big that their heads were bigger than a size 12 boot.

( Well, snapping turtles are tasty and they eat baby ducks. So that would be two good reasons to take them. They do, however, take many years to get to maturity, so popping them off for the sake of popping them off would be foolish, in my opinion, of course. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif )

It is an amazing sight to see duck suddenly get pulled under by a snapping turtle. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Turtles are worthless, cept for eating.

They eat your fish in the pond, sometimes right off the stinger!!!

I kill em everyone I see....

DAP,

No lofty purpose or high ideals needed. The turtles are both unwelcome and uninvited.

Catching and moving them, while hilarious as a concept, is not a valid plan.

My neighbors share the same low opinion of the critters as I, so moving them from here to any of their theres, would be rather dangerous to my hide.

Nope, if they choose to squat in my pond, their demise is assured... strictly their choice... and mine.

Y'all have a good day.

When I was a a boy there were kids that would go down to the pond and shoot frogs and turtles with their BB guns. These same kids would also blow up frogs with firecrackers. They would do this for "FUN".

Myself and my friends would go down to the pond and collect different creatures, bring them home, set them up in aquariums, read and learn about them, then eventually release them. It was an enjoyable and educational hobby for us.

To kill something for food or property protection is fine in my opinion. To brag about it or to kill something for the mere fun of it is so below me I may never understand it.

I hunt and fish and was taught not to kill what I didn't eat. This is the beginning of conservation.

I trap racoons, opossums, etc... on my property in live traps and relocate them to a state park down the road. I'm a busy man...I have a family, a business I work 50-60 hours a week at, I have a house being built, I'm fixing my current house for sale, and I am starting a farming operation...and I still have the time to treat animals I dislike with respect. I want my children to learn from my actions and grow up with an education and to have decent morals.

I guess it all comes down to education, conceince, and morals.

I guess some don't have any of the three. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Well, humans are tasty and they eat baby cows. So that would be two good reasons to take them. They do, however, take many years to get to maturity, so popping them off for the sake of popping them off would be foolish, but then I never met a human that I didn't enjoy....

Somebody brought up a type of snapper turtle called an Alligator turtle. They are an amazing species of turtle that can live over 200 years, and are the largest fresh water turtle..
300 lb specimens are not uncommon, and of course are dangerous as heck.....Had one for many years in a 150 gal aquarium...
There was a Discovery show ( or some special) where they caught on large turtle. They found arrow heads and civil war muskets in its shell and this special was only on ten years ago /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

They live long if you dont kill them /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
