Very interesting set of replys here. I have somewhat of the same experience as Farmwithjunk, in that the best dealers around me through word of mouth and my personal experience were not even close to the cleanest shops and the owner was also a delivery guy/mechanic/ and the lone salesman from what I could tell. He also seems to answer the phone about 1/3 of the time along with the secretary. Might not be a big beutiful place, but with the owner doing so much of the work himself (he does have other mechanics and drivers) I feel safe in knowing that he will do a good job because its his company on the line, and nothing so far has made me think twice about this. The two fancy places I went to looked very nice but didn't seem to be the type of place where I would want to buy a tractor. Unfortunately, I think it is just too hard to generalize although I guess if you had to start some place, Mikes list is probably a good starting point.

I just went through the tractor purchasing experience and here are a few real examples/quotes of what DOES NOT make a good dealer...."how does this hood open"....."we don't deliver"...."have to charge extra for mower / backblade assembly"(even though prices are no better)....."oh - sorry but that price you were quoted (twice very clearly) was wrong". Took me some time and effort but I did find a great local dealer.

What makes a good dealer?

When you can call them on the phone and order an expensive part for you on your word. Or, if in stock, they'll leave it outside so you can pick it up after closing hours letting you come pay later for it.

I'm guessing that trust was earned but good dealer support nonetheless
