What makes a tractor a tractor?”

I guess just calling something a tractor makes it a tractor if it can even be remotely used as one. Sort of like the RV industry now calling pop up campers and trailers RV's. Used to be only the ones with motors in them were called RV's. I guess it is just a sales and advertising thing to sell us stuff.

Not to start a war or anything, but I don't think of the Steiners or the Powertracs as tractors anymore than I think of a skidsteer as a tractor. Maybe a multipurpose utility vehicle, but it just doesn't seem tractorish to me.

Hey! Them's fightin words!!! hee hee. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I don't think of our Power Trac as a tractor, either. I tend to look at our Power Trac as a tool. Nothing more, nothing less. It is just a tool to get work done. I looked at tractors and came to the conclusion that they weren't the right tool for the jobs that I needed to do as a homeowner and volunteer at the church and little league. We also have a large International Harvester tractor/loader. It is an industrial model. Big rear tires filled with fluid. Smoke stack. 3pt hitch with draft control. Full cab. I think it goes close to 8000 pounds. I consider that a tractor. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Close?

"Blasphemy is regarded by some as a continued and obstinate
rejection of the gospel."

Hmmm, maybe a little too close! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Hee hee. Look, folks. A tractor is a tool. What makes a tractor a tractor.... The same thing that makes a hammer a hammer, a pair of pliers a pair of pliers and a swiss army knife a really neat thing to have in your pocket!

I think the more important question is...

When is a door not a door? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

We could make this an interesting and lively post like the CW Stevenson one about his Kubota backhoe and say what really makes a tractor a tractor a tractor is the Orange color, but then, I think most of us are a little beyond that flag waving, egomaniac, self-indulging, narrow minded perspective even if it is correct. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Of course I'm only kidding as International Red ones are also real tractors. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

When is a door not a door?

Obviously when it is open. Then it is the absence of the door what makes the doorway useful.

The door can only be a door when the door is closed.

When a door is open it is just in the way really...serves no door function unless closed...so an open “door” is not really a door at all.

Henro,
I agree. If a door is open, it is not a door at all.

However, if a door is closed, it is also not a door. It is a wall. It is a barrier. But it cannot be a door.

Therefore, I have come to the conclusion that doors do not exist. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

A tractor is that thing that cost less than my car, and does a heck of a lot more to help me. John

. . . And, one day, that tractor will be worth more than that same car. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
