You need 0w30 for cold starts in Maine. Otherwise, the top end will starve for lubrication for a few seconds until the oil pump gets suction.

Back in the 70's when all of us Neanderthals used dino oil, because that all there was at the time..... When I would start my cold gas engine the mechanical oil pressure gauge would take time to build pressure and then it would go back down towards zero psi again before it built pressure again and stayed up. Back then I attributed this to the oil getting pumped into the cold engine and it would take a little time before it flowed back down through the cold engine back into the sump to be picked up again by the suction tube, as well as the thick oil in the metal tube going to the gauge being a little sluggish. And that was dino 10W30 back in the day and the temps weren't all that cold, maybe in the +20's. We've come a very long way with the oils since then.

I worked for 31 years in the lube oil production area of a major oil company. We were privy to the research carried out by our Canadian affiliate. One test they did was to put a Dodge 024 in a cold room kept at -40 F/C. They fitted the 4 cylinder with a transparent valve cover and filmed the engine being started with various oils in it. ALL the oil but one smoked the valve cover badly because no oil got to it to lubricate it because it took a while for the oil pump giving off just heat while trying to suck cold oil to heat the oil up enough near it for it to flow into the pump suction. The only oil that pumped the oil right up to the valve assembly was a 0wxx one. They told us that we needed a synthetic oil because dino oils just could not be made to 0wxx specs and still meet the new Noack volatility test. They started a hydrotreating program that later got us an oil that would come a little closer. They also found a way to turn wax (byproduct of lube oil manufacture and actually sold at a higher price than lube oil) into oil. That process was due to start up about the same time that they acquired Mobil 1 technology due to a merger with a another big oil company. Supposedly that process was started up and the oil used in blending.
