What? No 15-40?

Well, then I'd just use 10w-30 and be done with the conundrum.

Frankly, I DO use 10w-30. Shell Rotella Semi-synthetic, WalMart $16 a gallon or the 10w-30 from Kubota.

Years ago, we all got so used to 10w-30 and 10-40 in our cars/trucks, but times changed. Now, Ford specs 5w-20 for everything and has for a long time, Honda and other do too. Like you, I was surprised in '05 getting a truck with that 5w-20 spec. What? No 10w-30??? I asked.

Shoot, you've even got 0w-20 products now. I suspect the oil technology is just that much better than the old days, and this is huge, the EPA issues are also involved we lay folks may not completely comprehend.

Ya, I agree with you bp. I run shell rotella 5w40 synthetic all year long as I feel it's the best protection for the money. 5w in cold of winter and 40 w in summer heat.
Please chime in if I'm confused. It's what my thoughts were when I bought it, also convenient to buy in Walmart at $21 a gal.
Thanks

My Kubota manuals, neither the BX nor the B, mentioned the 5w-40. I found that interesting. Kubota does not sell 5w-40 either. I used it in my BX, but have not yet used it in my B.

Heres the deal. The earth wouldn't stop spinning if one used any of the Kubota oils or any of the Rotella oils. The engine isn't going to die because you used any of them. Period.

But then, I've been to the two/thirds world and I've seen what they do and what they have available. If it is oil, they use it and don't have these discussions.

Well, I have two things everyone else has. One is an opinion. I use Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck oil 5W-40 in my Deere 4100 and my two Volkswagen TDI's. As well as all my other engines just for convenience.

The API service classes[9] have two general classifications: S for "service/spark ignition" (typical passenger cars and light trucks using gasoline engines), and C for "commercial/compression ignition" (typical diesel equipment). Engine oil which has been tested and meets the API standards may display the API Service Symbol (also known as the "Donut") with the service designation on containers sold to oil users.[9]

As BP FICK mentioned the newer motors all spec lower viscosity oils. My new F150 specs 5W-20. There have been numerous posts on oil viscosity on the F150 Forum and one of the ford mechanics stated that as manufacturing processes improved and they have tried to make engines smaller to fit in smaller vehicles the oil passages within the motors have gotten smaller so they now use thinner viscosity oils to ensure adequate volume at standard pressures. Supposedly the oil manufactures have also gotten better so you get the same if not better lubrication with the new thinner oils.

If you really want to read oil wars visit the Ford F150 or Kawasaki Vulcan Forums Oil section:), they have some pretty heated debates.

"warranty claims". They will pull a UOA and see what they says before any owner slips etc...

15w-40 works but there are better oils with lower pour, better ZDDP etc.

Ahhh---ZDDP. I have been wondering what oil to use once my supply of higher ZDDP Deere 0W40 synthetic is exhausted. The newer oils--all of them that I can find--are rated at levels that reflect lower ZDDP levels and I wonder if these will harm my engines? Kubota says not to use the newer ratings. What to do?

I used to run 15W-40 Engine Oil in my Kubota L39 but since the temps where I live regularly get down to below zero F and quite often to minus 25 degrees F a few years ago I started to use Fully Synthetic Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40 Engine Oil year around without problems. It made a major difference in below zero starting and during real hot summer days that sometimes can get into the 80s it runs without problems or oil consumption.
Good luck,
Jim
