actually, S stands for service, and C for commercial.. however.. it SHOULD stand for spark / compression IMHO

a 10w40 is likely a S rated oil and is NOT suitable for your diesel engine.

I'm a new kubota owner, so while browsing through the manual I saw something that struck me as absolutely bizarre.

It said to run car oil (sae 20 or 30, 10-30) in a diesel? Why? Never heard of anything like that.

And Kubota says you can use a group 5 oil and not extend the drains. Kubota is behind the times on oil.

There are many visc fluids for diesels. Just need to look around and why you want.

For clarity I believe the OP meant to say that Kubota was recommending oils HE, the OP refers to as "car oils"; not that there are actual car oils vs. truck or tractor oils- just that those oils Kubota was recommending seem to be used primarily in cars, not diesel whatevers.
Correct me if I'm wrong....

I always thought 15-40 was for diesels.

Used to be (and may still be) the most commonly used weight oils for the Porsche 911 aircooled engines.

Go to your local Kubota dealer and buy the Kubota brand 15w-40. It is a good oil for that tractor and with Kubota oil in it they would never claim anything against it in case of warranty work. Kubota 15w-40 is what we run in every Kubota machine we own (ZD21, B7610, B3200, M9540).

The other thing you must realize is the Kubota owners manuals are pretty loosely translated to English. Often they'll say things that contradict each other, make no sense or are sometimes just plain wrong. Still don't understand why they insist on translating and printing them in Japan instead of just having Kubota Tractor Corporation (USA) write and print them. :confused2:

I agree, we must have a translation problem.

As I stated early on, your Kubota Dealer will have 15w-40, if that is what you want to use.

Local WalMart will as well, in Delo, Rotella, etc.

Why 15w-40 isn't in your manual is a great unknown, but the chances are great that if you got an oil change at your Kubota dealership? You'd very likely get their 15w-40 in North Carolina.

But just remember, diesel oil DOES indeed come in 10w-30 and 5w-40 and even the rarer 30w. They are still diesel oils, and not gasoline types of the same versions.

If you could scan the page of your owners manual that was giving you the confusion, we could understand better what it is you are seeing.

Engine oil: API Service Classification CD, CE, or CF

above 77 degrees: sae 30, sae 10w-30 or sae 10w-40

32-77 degrees: sae 20, sae 10w-30, or sae 10w-40

below 32 degrees: sae 10w, sae 10w-30, or sae 10w-40.
