Here is what I am being offered by my former NH dealer I bought my New Holland tractor from: John Deere oil for $60.00 per 5 gallon bucket. He says its better oil than NH oil. He said the new New Holland tractors have too many problems and have cheapened them too much for him! He now only sells John Deere tractors! WOW!

I use 15-40 Rotella-T yr round. Not pushing Rotella, thats just what I've always used. But changing to a 5-40? I don't see the need. I have thought about using a syn oil, but my tractor is usually inside a semi-heated garage(never below 25f) or it's plugged in 2 to 3 hours before starting. There have been times where it's been -40f, but i seldom run the tractor when it's that cold. Too cold too snow.:D

as far as filters go, i use OEM. I only do put on about 250 hours a yr. For me, i don't trust cross referenced filters. But thats just me.

flyingcow; I think I am going to do like you and stay with 15w40 oil weight but might take my dealer up on the JD motor oil. He said it meets or exceeds the NH specs for my engine. I am going to stick with NH OEM oil filters for now. I just find it strange that the the OEM filter numbers keep changing. Since I am like you and only use my tractor about 80 hours per year, it isn't really a big expense to use NH filters.

It says JD oil or NH oil....but it's not them that make it. As long as it meets or exceeds specs, i wouldn't think you could go wrong.

Did he give you any specific reason why one oil was supposdly better than the other? I'm very skeptical of that claim. It sounds like he justifying the color change he made in his business!
My personal opinion is that as long as it meets the API classification and SAE viscosity grade in your owners manual, you can use it. I use Chevron Delo 400LE 15W40 in our diesel equipment because I can convenietly pick it up at Costco in Missoula. I wouldn't hesitate to use Exon/Mobil DelVac or Shell Rotella brands if they carried them as long as they met API and SAE standards specified by the OEM. All the rest of the brand stuff is just marketing hype, in my opinion. It's not like the refineries that blend these oils set up the production line a few days a month to make "cheap oil" that doesn't meet the OEM requirements. Most engine failures are caused by too long change intervals (both filter and oil), improper assembly of parts, wrong API or SAE grade, overheating, etc not the brand of oil.

I thought I would add that I "Amsoilized" (changed all lubricants to Amsoil) in the TC45D I purchased a few years ago and it's working out fine. I am using all NH filters though except for the engine since Amsoil makes a filter that is 98.7% efficient at 20 microns.
