Good day 3130,
how far must you move the machine?
what kind of tree was it?
what happens with the hole you will create?
what happens to the stump once removed?
is this for family or as a business opportunity?

I suggest you do it for free just to see what is involved.

Martin
I hauled some stumps to the land fill a while back.
They charge 36 $ a ton to dump.

I took out about 5 - 4 to 12'' stumps for 3 of my next door neighbors.
Done it free as a good neighbor policy.

They get 500.00 to remove stumps around here in NH. This is why I figure 200-250 is more then fair. I have to load and unload tractor, fuel, and get rid of the stump.

To throw some more negativity into it :(, are you a "licensed and insured" business or just some guy with a tractor and trailer? As with anything else, the prices charged should reflect the total investment. Check on prices for excavation insurance and be sure to tell them you have a "backhoe for hire" doing below grade work.

Not to change the topic too much, around here most people just have stumps ground down about a foot below grade for about $50 per stump.

Im thinking that charge is per stump - assuming there is more than one stump to do. It does not include taking away any of the chips which they tend to place back in the hole. Pretty much ensuring that grass wont grow there until the chips are removed. Im not sure who would show up for just one stump for $50 ?? I know it wouldnt be worth my time - but thats me ;)

This is not a neighbor. I do alot of favors for them for FREE. They already agreed 250 is cheap so I'm gonna do in the spring for them, By the way grass will grow no problem as long as you put good loam down and seed. They are doing that anyway. I know from my past experience though. Thanks to all that replied. :)

I'm with tlbuser, as a business that changes EVERYTHING, then your in the $500 range, as a guy with a tractor/backhoe, $250 sounds fair. I can assume that you or he will have a chainsaw or cutting device in case the BH doesn't "pop" the stump out? And someone has contacted the utility companies to mark any lines that the "owner was certain it's clear" with phone lines, gas lines, etc.

I tried to dig out some stumps with my backhoe a few years ago and couldn't "pop" them out, they were scotch pine, about 6 years old, and half rotted (or so I thought), ended up digging around them and cutting them lower with the chainsaw and covering them over.

Good Luck.

Well I dug up alot of stumps without the use of a chainsaw, But it just takes a tad bit longer, no big deal. They are happy and so am I.

I think you are being more than fair at $200 - $250.00. Good Lord... That's a good amount of work you're doing at half what they were quoted. I should think they'd be VERY pleased!

You must not be facing a very high disposal fee and/or long run to the disposal site. In my neck of the woods, I have both. :( Plus I must use a different trailer (one with sides) to transport the stump. No using the equipment trailer unless I want to risk a ticket!

Lots of time and expense! It's no wonder that most folks grind and put up with the result.

Have you done the pre-work? Has the diggers hot line or equivalent been called and all the underground utilities identified? Do you know where they have any french drains, septic lines/tank, sewer lines, sprinklers etc? How about overhead lines? Any in the way? How close is it to the house, garage, driveway? Will you bugger up the lawn? Driveway? Do you have any way of blocking spectators from getting too close? Kids? Animals? Are you tarping the lawn to protect it? Are you responsible for the addition of new top soil (and it's cost)? What happens if you break down and leak out all your hydraulic oil? Is that a discharge of hazardous waste? Do you know who to call?

Are you insured as a commercial enterprise? Licensed ? Do you need a license or tag to transport your tractor commercially? {some states are funny that way}. How have you structured the truck, trailer and tractor? Part of an LLC or personal property. Are you operating as part of an LLC or an individual? What happens if they sue you? Will you have a written contract to show in court? Does it show scope of work? Outline your responsibilities? Have clauses freeing you from liabilities? Are you going to take pictures the pre, during and post work? If you are charging by time, how will you document your time spent? Will you have a document stating they are happy with the work and it was completed fully? Or will you give the Judge a blank stare and leave with a bleeding bank account?

There are a lot of negatives posted, but I don't mean to give the impression you shouldn't do it. I just don't want you to walk blindly into a pit of unlimited liability for the lure of $200. People have lost shiny new tractor, trailer, truck, house and assets for the lure of less. If you dig and cut a fiber optic bundle -- "ouch" is the least you will say.

The $200 is probably about right. $50 for transport & setup is pretty standard and 2 hours at $75 for the work. Be specific about the time being clock time and not hour meter time! You should probably cap it at $200 or $250? Remember that load, unload & cleaning time at your end is not counted. It's part of doing business. If you want to make more $$, canvas the neighbors. Tell them that you will be there on X date with your machine, have a picture flier or picture book to show it. Tell them the $75 rate, 2 hour minimum and $25 transport / set up. (decrease the original persons by $25, but charge $25 for each neighbor) You may get quite a bit of extra work. Be specific that the 1/2 price setup charge is a one time only deal.

Whew! Sorry to be such a wordy turdy -- coffee just kicked in on me!
