What should I charge to remove a 10" tree stump with my backhoe? The tree has been rotted for 6 years now. Any help would be appreciated
Have you done the pre-work? Has the diggers hot line or equivalent been called and all the underground utilities identified? Do you know where they have any french drains, septic lines/tank, sewer lines, sprinklers etc? How about overhead lines? Any in the way? How close is it to the house, garage, driveway? Will you bugger up the lawn? Driveway? Do you have any way of blocking spectators from getting too close? Kids? Animals? Are you tarping the lawn to protect it? Are you responsible for the addition of new top soil (and it's cost)? What happens if you break down and leak out all your hydraulic oil? Is that a discharge of hazardous waste? Do you know who to call?
Are you insured as a commercial enterprise? Licensed ? Do you need a license or tag to transport your tractor commercially? {some states are funny that way}. How have you structured the truck, trailer and tractor? Part of an LLC or personal property. Are you operating as part of an LLC or an individual? What happens if they sue you? Will you have a written contract to show in court? Does it show scope of work? Outline your responsibilities? Have clauses freeing you from liabilities? Are you going to take pictures the pre, during and post work? If you are charging by time, how will you document your time spent? Will you have a document stating they are happy with the work and it was completed fully? Or will you give the Judge a blank stare and leave with a bleeding bank account?
There are a lot of negatives posted, but I don't mean to give the impression you shouldn't do it. I just don't want you to walk blindly into a pit of unlimited liability for the lure of $200. People have lost shiny new tractor, trailer, truck, house and assets for the lure of less. If you dig and cut a fiber optic bundle -- "ouch" is the least you will say.
The $200 is probably about right. $50 for transport & setup is pretty standard and 2 hours at $75 for the work. Be specific about the time being clock time and not hour meter time! You should probably cap it at $200 or $250? Remember that load, unload & cleaning time at your end is not counted. It's part of doing business. If you want to make more $$, canvas the neighbors. Tell them that you will be there on X date with your machine, have a picture flier or picture book to show it. Tell them the $75 rate, 2 hour minimum and $25 transport / set up. (decrease the original persons by $25, but charge $25 for each neighbor) You may get quite a bit of extra work. Be specific that the 1/2 price setup charge is a one time only deal.
Whew! Sorry to be such a wordy turdy -- coffee just kicked in on me!
