I found out that the straw is to keep it shaded
so that the sun doesn't scorch it.

Kinda like when you're out swimming all day in the lake without sunscreen.
You get a real bad sunburn from this.
The straw is sunscreen for the seed.

Gotta keep it wet. Sprinklers that simulate a good gentle rain are best.
