I use my 5/8” auger in my Stihl gas drill the most for thru-bolts on fence posts

Planting posts with dirt, 6"

I've done all of them about equally... maybe trees and bushes a tad more.

Bare rooted trees but have done gallon pots. Nothing super big like large root balls. 12" breaks up the soil enough that you can dig the hole larger if needed.

I will dig a deeper hole than I need, then cave in the side walls for larger holes.

I have a 12 inch and a 6 inch. The six inch goes into the ground so fast that I cannot control it. Then I have to use my backhoe to pull it out of the ground!!! I've removed the teeth from it and put them on my 12 inch auger, when they wore out, and never replaced them on the 6 inch auger. I use the 12 inch for everything.

So far I have use my 12". I have a 6" for my 4x4's.

Anybody know about a threaded auger attachments? Not the standard square with a pin.

I use the 9" most for 4' posts as it allows me to use a tamping bar around it when back filling dirt. For corner posts I use a 12" as they are larger in diameter. I only backfill with dirt as I have had bad luck with concrete. I have 6", 9", 12", and 18" augers.

I have 6", 9" and 15". I use the 6" and 15" bits the most. 15" allows room in the hole so I don't have to cut the top treated rail when doing end braces. They last longer when not cut. Posts are concrete.

Building fences in the past, I think we tried a few different things. One of the more effective things was to pre-drill post holes with something like a 4" to 6" auger slightly smaller than the posts, then to push the posts in. Dad liked pounding with the bucket, I wasn't convinced. But, eventually they bought a 3pt mounted post driver which worked well. Anyway, driven posts were probably better than drilling oversized holes and tamping the posts in.

I gave up using an auger on my tractor. I have a NH skid steer with a 36" auger we plant trees with. I also have a 18" auger if we are doing post frame building or fence posts.

I have a hydraulic FEL mounted post hole digger, so similar except you can see better. Much easier than 3 point and best of all, you can reverse the bit. Plus, it will simply stall out hydraulically if the bit hits a root or rock.

I have a 6" and a 12".

The 6" gets used for setting 4x4 posts for fences and trellises.

The 12" gets used for deck footings and planting trees.
