What size back blade?

I would say a 5 footer. Angled over it should be just a bit wider than your tractor. ;)

Agreed, 5 foot works well on my BX25.

Good to hear... have a 5 footer sitting ready to go this winter as soon as I take my BH off for the first time on my BX.

Mine's 12 years old now, I bought it with my first Kubota, a BX 2200. I finally flipped the cutting edge over last year but other than that no issues. I wouldn't want to go wider because it starts to act like a rudder when the snow gets deeper.

5 footer worked fine on my BX2660 as well. It appears you have already made the best choice. Also it may clear your backside in case you chose to turn the blade 180 degrees for pushing backwards....at least it did on mine.

Okay it's late and my apologies, but I'm not following you

I think he is saying that if you spin the blade around and push backwards with the blade at an angle, the path cleared is wider than your back tires.

Aha! Wondering if this is the best for snowplowing (less than 12in) on a gravel sloped driveway or... the FEL? Again, apologies... first winter with my BX.

I may be in the minority on this, and both my tractors are a little larger and a lot older- but i bought a new back blade and I just seemed to end up using the bucket plowing forward and only used the back blade in reverse.
after purchasing a heavy box blade i ended up selling the new back blade and since the box blade has a rear facing blade i don't miss it . 90+ percent of the plowing I end up with the loader bucket in float and at the end of where it gets pushed I use the loader to lift and pile the snow ...
I am sure Many others use the backblade quite a bit -(100% if they don't have a loader):D
Figuring how to do it , that best suits you- is half the fun of a new tractor ownership

Actually I was assuming he was referring to being able to spin it while on the tractor without it hitting the rear wheels.

If your experiences are anything like mine you will wind up using both. The back blade will work fine going forward in 6" or less of snow until the snow builds up at the edges and then you will wind up taking smeller and smaller bites. Once the blade becomes unproductive you will go to the loader to push back the edges. Also, if you let the snow get too deep before you get started the back blade will build up too much snow and you won't have traction enough to pull it. Then you will go right to the loader. I never spent much time with the blade rotated and going backwards but it does work as well. If you can arrange it make the heaviest cuts while going downhill, the gravity factor does help. Since you are on gravel not pavement you will have to monitor the blade height unless the ground is really frozen hard. If the ground is soft and you drop the blade all the way it'll dig right in and stop you short.

These are just my experiences but most of the area I'm clearing is paved which is easier than gravel. It sounds like a lot to learn but you'll get a feel for it pretty quick. I used blade and loader on a BX for 11 years before switching to the blower last year. I still miss it whenever I break a shear bolt or clog the chute. It's slower than blowing but it never let me down.

Yes, I was referring to the 5 foot blade, being rotated 180 deg, not hitting the back tires on the BX. A longer blade won't clear. And, as others have noted, that FEL is the best for deep snow stacking. And....be careful how far you push/pile that snow in gravel. If you push/pile that gravel based snow too far past the edge of your driveway, you'll just have as much work in the spring raking it all back......that is, if it's on your nice lawn. Cheers, Mike

Generally speaking, I like to see the rear blade wide enough to cover the rear tire track, then add a foot for angling the blade when moving snow. I have a six foot blade for my L3400, wish it was a seven foot blade in the winter-time. As someone mentioned earlier, it will act as a rudder and pull the front end around if the snow is too deep.

I use mine for plowing light snowfalls, up to about 12" of snow is no problem. More than that and I use the loader and save the blade for final cleanup.

A set of adjustable skid shoes is a real plus if you have a gravel driveway.

2X on tire width plus 1' min.

I figure that a 4 foot blade at angle won't cover the wheel tracks so I picked up a 5 footer last spring. I'll have to see how it goes but my plan is to get a set of the StabilWorks pinned 3ph arms and push it all the way to the right side, angled left. Then I'll use my fel as the primary mover with the blade cleaning up the right side. The next pass with the fel may still spill over some but the blade should make it so that I don't have to clean up both sides of the fel spill all the time.

Ive been using a 6 foot blade on my bx2200 for 12 years. Grading and plowing snow on a half mile lane. Love it!

5' is what you want for a BX. A set of skid shoes would make it nice for plowing snow.
