Hi. I am trying to figure out the best size box blade to put on a NH TC24D. I really only have some grapefruit size rocks and twigs sticking out of the ground now, but I'm sure more will surface. I have heard that the 48" is sized closer, but a 60" will still work fine if you don't get too greedy. Opinions, anyone? Thanks.

P.S. - also looking for opinions as to the best tool for picking up these rocks and sticks, getting ready for lawn turf. I am just kind of assuming a BB would be best.

Bobby,
Stay with a box blade that is just about the same width or a few inches wider than the outside edge width of your rear tires . Your tractor should handle it fine . If the box blade is to narrow it will be impossible to get very close to trees ,buildings ,etc. And if you are back blading you will not have the tires in the new graded portion of the box ,which would make it much tougher to level or smooth out .

BigAl,

You made me think of another important question - if I do get the box blade, are you saying that I may not need a rear blade for backblading, now and in the future? I have used a rear blade before on a Ford 8N, and it was handy for a bunch of stuff. I was assuming that I would have a rear blade, but now I am wondering if the Box Blade can do the work of both. It seems like it would be a lot harder to finesse a box blade for dressing gravel, topsoil, etc. We don't have much snow at all in the Pacific Northwest, so I don't think that is too much of an issue.

For my two cents worth, a box blade can do dual duty . I ran my box blade for years before I started using a rear angle blade . I have Hyd. Top & Tilt on the box ,so I can easily use it in ditches or to crown a gravel drive . A angle blade is very nice if you want to stay out of the ditch when you are cleaning it . I don't have one now with my new tractor and it is not one of my top picks for additional attachments I want . I like being able to move material around with my box as I need to , something that would be very hard to do with a blade .

Box Blades are very versitile, you may find you don't need a regular blade, or you have minimal use for one, especially after you gain some experience with the box blade. I would look for a 48" to 54" box for the TC24D. I use a 60" rear blade on my TC24D and it can be a bit much in some conditions, mine is a Midwest blade purchased through Corrihers with Offset/Angle/Tilt features and I think it is very well made. I also have a 60" LandPride Box Blade, but I use a B2910 not the TC24D for that implement.

As for cleaning up the debris from you yard, I think you might find a rake would be the better choice. A 72" rake would not be too much for the TC24D

Bobby, I have one of those TC 24D's and I find that a 54 inch box scraper is just fine. You do not want anything more narrow and I would shy away from a 60 inch bad boy as well, tractor tends to get real tippy. I have attached three photos of my tractor and a Gearmore 54 inch box scraper. Take note of the somewhat different 3 point mount, it is truly heavy-duty!

George,

Great pics. I saw your other posts here on TBN. If I may ask, what did you buy your TC24 to do, and what are you actually doing with it? Are you happy? Is it enough tractor for what you need?

That box blade looks great, do you like it? I went to the Gearmore website and saw it. Is it a 54" 2G1? Is it heavy duty enough? Is that spring (I think it's a spring) just asking to get whacked in the woods under heavy usage? Is that a Top & Tilt setup I see, and if so, did you get it just for the BB? Am I asking too many questions? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Last one: how much was that BB? Ok, that's it. Thanks.

Bobby, gee you ask lots of questions. But first thank you for the picture comment. I originally purchased the tractor to whip the property (an old orchard) we purchased back into shape. I was renting John Deere’s from the local rental shop and it was costing way more to rent it for 2 days than to make payments on a new unit for a month and a half. At first the big priory was to re-grade and channel water away from the house and the road. For 30 years this had been a problem and I was not going to put up with it under my watch. So I purchased the New Holland TC 24D with a TNT setup using Gearmore hydraulic cylinders and a Gearmore 54 inch box scraper. The price paid for the box scraper and TNT system is unknown since it was part of the package. The spring has caused no problems and really helps “spring” the rippers back up into a stowed position. The Gearmore box scraper is my second one that I have owned the previous one went with the original tractor also a Gearmore unit. But I can report that even though it got considerable use (abuse at times) it never let me down and other than paint wear it did not shoe any signs of wearing out anytime soon. The TNT setup was purchased for use with the box scraper but it helps out so much when hooking up any implement that I am very surprised that they are not standard or at least optional factory equipment on all tractors. It really makes all the difference in the world when it comes to grading “don’t leave the shed without it”. I have been very happy with the size and power of the tractor even though reliability has been in issue. I could have purchased a bigger tractor but it would not fit and bigger tractors can at times cause more headaches than they solve, so the TC 24D is just right. I am currently using it to power the Bearcat PTO chipper that has saved us so far a few thousand in tree trimming and brush chipping services. It makes some very fine mulch that is almost dirt like. Tractor has no problem powering the chipper. I do not own a pickup so I use the tractor with trailer to pickup topsoil from the local supply yard. I also have moved hundreds of yards of mulch onto my property to help control erosion and lower the ground temperature. The mulch has also added badly needed organic matter back into the soil in preparation to plant new Avocado and very rare and special Tangelo’s from a tree found only on this property. I cannot say enough just how much my tractor was needed and what I have been able to accomplish with it. I am thankful for having the means to have purchased the right equipment that has allowed us to turn an old and neglected orchard into a thriving and promising orchard we are all be proud of. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I have attached 2 picture of what I am currently using my tractor for. The first one shows the New Holland TC 24D with Bearcat Chipper getting ready to take care of a downed tree that fell on the road.
