WHAT SIZE/BRAND OF DISKS?

I have a set of both 3-point and drawn discs. The problem with the 3-pt discs are they tend to be too light (not lightly built, but light in weight so smaller 3-pt hydraulics can lift tehm). The advantage of the 3-pt discs are they make them in smaller widths (mine is 6') which allows you to get around gardens and lawns.

But, let me say, once I got hold of my 10' drawn discs... then disking really became fun. They probably weigh 2,000 lbs at least and cut so much better (serated discs on the front). The weight makes a huge difference.

I went ahead and bought the UNITED brand disks. It is a 6 1/2 ft Model 600 with sealed bearings, 1" axle, double U- bolt bearing hangers, 3"x3" square tubing, 20- 18" notched disks that weighs 750 lbs. I gave $972.00 total. I put $250.00 cash down, but I went on ahead and took 'advantage' of the 90 days no interest (no other dealership offered this). Payoff is $722.00, but of course I have monthly payment installments for 12 months, but I plan on paying it off in a month or so.

I bought it from Gordon Murril, owner of Action Equipment in Livingston, LA. His website is Welcome to Action Equipment (which is outdated, but gives an idea). I bought fronm him Several times. Always been treated Extremly nice each time I have been there- even if I didn't buy. So, again I am highly recommending Action Equipment to anyone needing a tractor or implements. Very down to earth, friendly, and straight forward.

i'm relatively new to tractors, and especially garden soil prep. i plan on having a good size garden in a few years. i'll probably keep making it bigger! does a disc harrow replace the need for a roto tiller? thanks.

Hey Travis...

That sounds like a pretty good disk to plant food plots. It's been pretty hot and dry in SC the past month, and the food plots are drying up. I hope you guys are getting more rain over your way. Deer season began Aug 15 over here but they aren't moving much because of the heat...100 degrees each day. Been thinking about hunting naked...

Diesel...I think I would stay with the rototiller. It does a better job for a garden. It takes several passes with a disk to do what yours would do in one pass. A disk is better for scruffier stuff, and chopping up weedy ground.

Hi Travis,

I recently bought a new disk after shopping around and asking opinions, (just like you). Hardee and Leinbach are good quality disks. A couple friends recommended getting the screw type gang adjustments. I got a Leinbach, (screw adjust). I am very satisfied with it. I got the 20" disks, 20 by 20. I paid $950. I also noticed that Hardee can be ordered with the screw type adjustment. Screw type is what I recommend for the gang adjustments, instead of a hammer or big piece of pipe the others sometimes require.

You want your gangs to be adjustable! When disking, I adjust the gangs at a steep angle to dig and turn the soil. Then spread your food plot seed...then adjust your gangs straight to smooth the ground out and cover over your seed, (if you don't have a drag).

Redbug hit the nail on the head. I have an old King brand harrow with screw adjusters. Wouldn't be without them. I welded impact sockets, inverted, onto the ends of my adjusters to allow me to adjust with a 1/2 ratchet. Sometimes I'll pull by the shop and run the rear with the impact wrench. This set-up saves a world of time when you need to really tear up the ground, then finish it back out.
