What size gas cylinders?

The tank belongs to whomever's name is on the neck. By exchanging the cylinder you just gave them yours and now you have their cylinder in your possession. You can never sell the cylinder and can't take it anywhere else to have it filled. You basically just gave your cylinders away. Test me on this. Take one of the cylinders back and try telling the shop that you own them. When they look at the neck what are they going to say? Who's name is there? You need to go back and get your cylinders.

I will have to give them a call. THAT would pi$$$$ me off greatly.

Well, I called and he gave a half a$$ed answer. Basically it was "on smaller tanks (80cuft) no one usually ever questions it, I have never seen a problem". But, he said, "if you have the paperwork.." I don't cause the seller never mentioned that I would need to keep it.

So I'm going to ask for my tank to be refilled and given back. I have always dealt with the smaller (MC) oxy/acet tanks and have never had it questioned. When I got my mig a few years back, I needed a tank and bought this one from a local welding supply shop. Never said a word about this issue.

Seems like very deceptive business practices to me. I am suprised they get away with it.

I figure this out after I bought a set of used cylinders. When I went to get them filled, they asked if I owned them. Not only did they want a bill of sale but they also looked at the neck. Thankfully, the neck on the cylinders that I bought didn't have anybody's name on them. They guy said they see this all the time. People who think they own the cylinders, but they really don't.

I have sold a few cylinders over the years...

Each one was hydro-tested, filled and came with a copy of my original receipt... so far no problems.

On the large 02 tanks, I have a couple of the older 1800 pound vs the new 2300 pound ???

No name on my old tanks and never a problem... someone gave me some newer high pressure cylinders and I couldn't do anything with them but give them back to Airco.

Cord:

Wonder where you live. I have three 80 CF tanks, one for MIG and two for TIG. I go between Roberts Oxygen and GTS and either will take the tank I got from the other, never any questions.

That's because they're small. The issues come with the larger tanks, 125 (?) and above.

A lot of (dishonest) people grind the necks down, putty them up and paint the whole tank so that it appears to be customer owned. That's one thing you have to watch out for when buying tanks from someone.

A lot of independent dealers get tanks refilled from other larger companies, so there isn't an issue accepting the tanks that are from the larger companies, Sometimes they may be able to purchase from a couple of different gas suppliers,so again it may not be an issue. And some companies have either gone out of business or been bought out, so that these tanks may appear to be someone else's yet, they became part of the overtaking companies stock tanks. Tanks can feasably last for 50 years or more, since the design and construction hasn't changed, as long as they are routinely tested and serviced.

Yea this was a dealer where I bought mine, and I "assume" he was legit. Had been there many years. I've sinced moved a couple hundred miles from there so going back is out of the question.

Lesson learned on that one.

A local company recovered hundreds of stolen cylinders with their name ground-off... they have a process that can recover an image from metal even when it had been ground off.

At work... we receive medical gas delivery several times each week... part of my job is to inspect the Medgas area each day. Not too long ago, we had a Oxygen Cylinder in the Manifold dated 1939... 70 years and still in service.

What I found unusual is this Cylinder was a "Linde" and the year stamp had **** Swastikas before and after the date. Linde is/was a German firm. I can only guess where this cylinder has traveled over the years... U-Boats, Zeppelins, etc.
