I'm getting ready to pull the crankshaft on my 240D and need a socket for the large nut that holds the front pulley. I don't mind buying a new socket but need to know what size. The nut is about 1 7/8". Does anyone know the correct size so I can get the right one on the first try. Is the flywheel nut on the other end of the crank the same size?

The way to measure your nut size, is to take the reading from flat face, to opposite flat face. If possible, use a vernier caliper. If you don't have one, then a good ruller, or tape. Your reading will tell you the proper socket to buy.

Thanks Woodchipper,
I can't reach far enough onto the cup with my caliper to get a good measurement. I am hoping someone out there will know what socket they have used for the project. It's 20 miles to town so I need to get it right on the first trip.

I just measured a nut and they are 46mm across (flat to flat).

I went to my local Rural King and picked up a 1 13/16 12 pt socket (close to 46mm) and it worked perfectly.

Here's hoping you get it done.

If you're interested in getting a pristine 240D, apparently the people who bought ours back in the fall of 2009 before we bought our Jetta TDI are trying to sell it.

Here's a photo of it from back then.

You should visit Harbor Freight while in Dallas and just get yourself a set of the heavy duty sockets (7/8" up to 2" + metric equivalent of same if you want) No tractor owner should be without them. I picked my sets up for $49 each several years ago when they were on sale and they have a lifetime warranty. The ball that holds the sockets to the ratchet fell out and they replaced it with a new ratchet, no questions asked.
