What size tractor?

Getting back to your question. Seriously, any tractor will do what you want -how fast, well that's another thing. What you should really do is to size up the implements you need to do the job(s) according to your timeframe. Then buy the tractor size that will handle the implements you need. Either over or under buying will not make you very happy. Personally, I don't subscribe to the biggest is best philosophy, but if your job calls for it, then go for it. Probably your decision will be made based on what size cutter you want to use. Also, I very much agree with the advice on the moldboard plow. My 2 cents.

My two cents - Save your money and get a good used 8N or better yet an MF35 for $2.5k-$4k. These are time tested and true tractors. Not may bells or whistles but big enough to do any job you are likely to encounter on a 5 acre vegetable farm. You're likely to have quite a few start up costs, no need to make a tractor payment a burden on your new operation. Believe it or not, real farmers are still making a living with 50 year old iron.

Buying used has it's pitfalls, too. I did to start with, but wish I had just bought new and gone on. I sure had a lot of problems since the old Massey's were not made for front end loaders and this caused a lot of problems that I really did not need.

The little Kubota's are really nice tractors and everything works the way it should. There are no surprises in the hydraulics (which there were in the Massey). They are reliable and have good resale if (and when) you decide to upgrade.
