What state is the cheapest place to retire at?

Good ideas here, and we have been thinking of Florida. Now, I would love California, except for the costs there. I used to live in San Francisco area and knew it quite well way back. I know it has changed, but man, the weather in some parts of California is about perfect it seems to me.

At my house in Georgia, it is supposed to be 12º next week!! Then, we have some bad heat/humidity days in summers too. Many people from north love to retire in our area, but I guess to them a couple of days in the teens is pretty good, but too cold for me old bones.

Sounds like you are agreeing with me.

What has improved in FLA?
Property Taxes?
House Insurance?
Car Insurance?
English is NOT a second language in Dade County?

I go back to Florida every year. I know the traffic is worse. Not sure how that is possible though but it is...

Houses are no longer built on swamp land?

Ok, the houses are much cheaper.

Yes, I'm agreeing with you. And tongue-in-cheek kind of way also saying that it has expanded up into central Florida.

As for House Insurance, there is a line item on my bill every year that shows how much I'm paying to insure other people :mad: I don't think houses are built on the beach so they can be washed away anymore, but they're certainly building in the swamp! A few inches of rain here and the county offices are flooded along with lots of houses. But, yes with the current economy the houses are certainly much cheaper now than they were a couple years ago.

The only problem I have with Florida is, its HOT. Being here in Texas I know about HOT, and we don't have any personal income tax here either, so why not just retire here? What I'd really like is to retire in the mountains of New Mexico where its cool in the summer. Probably won't happen because of all my family here in Texas.

I moved to New Mexico in 1989 from New Orleans and McComb part time in each. No regrets so far, I have been able to live and work in the mountains and have gotten by okay. Maybe I could have made more money in some other places but the last twenty years or so I have been living in the mountains while I was young enough to enjoy them.

About the relatives, hey the ones you really like you can tell them where you are moving to.
