I have been going through my Agri Supply catalog and see a number disc harrow blades. What do the different shapes of the blades do? Notched, smooth, raised, cone, flat, etc?

I come from the farm, so my comments apply to 20' farm disks - should still apply tho....

Notched are more aggressive, penetrate deeper into the ground. But they chip & break a lot easier on rocks.

Cone will throw the dirt farther. Will cover more. Might take more weight & hp to make them work tho.

Flat would more likely be a coulter for a combination tillage tool. It cuts the cornstalks & stubble before, for example, chisel teeth follow the row of coulters.

Smooth are the basic curved blade.

Can't think of what 'raised' means, but it's late....

At the end of the day, size matters on disk blades. A 20" blade will outdo any style of 16" blade.....

Rambler is right on. Generally on these disc's for small CUT will have two gangs ( dual ganged ).. ist row will be the agressive notched ones.. and the second row are the smooth ones to level out the furrows a bit.
