I use to be very organized. I'd clean it up, and one week later, lts like this again. Does getting old mean you lose your ability to put things away, or is it that you are just too tired and say to yourself that you will take care of it the next day. I don't know. All the projects got done, and usually on a moments notice, yet I can't even use this bench anymore. I've lost control of it. Wondering if others have the same experience. DSCN2665.jpg

Looks normal to me. Can you find the floor?

You need to put some shelves up. Clearly not enough horizontal surface area there.

I am very organized and (usually) everything has its place, but that's a different mental condition. My wife is the opposite - she never met a horizontal surface that did not need to be covered with her stuff.

It is Mind over Matter. You have to train yourself to pick it up and put it away after each project or job. No Exceptions (barring accidents or acts of nature.

I suffer from the same problem and I hate it. I waste more time looking for tools and parts than the time it would take to clean up.

I am slowly training myself, I get better sometimes but benches still end up like that...

I'm about as organized as a fart in a hurricane.

It's called: Controlled chaos. You know exactly where everything is, while no one else does, so they can't really mess with your stuff.

Where are the rats ? Or are they camera shy ? :)

Wait till you get to the third level of stuff and need to use stuff on the table surface.

I had been parking a car in my workshop, and the workbench (normally in the center of the bay) was rolled off against the wall and not accessible. It stayed clean for months.

On Wednesday, I moved the car out and put the workbench back in position. By Thursday it was collecting junk. Yesterday (Friday) I had to tinker with something and was down to working in a small area the size of a lunch tray. Time to clean up and it's only been 2 days!!

You just need a bigger bench.

That's what I did. To solve my issue, I built a 30 ft bench. It was great for a month and now I have a cluttered 30 ft bench.
It's part of getting older and still trying to do what you used to do but no longer have the boundless energy to do 100% of it. It's OK.

If you really want to get over it, just toss 3/4 of it out and start over. I do that every now and then and feel much better.
