I stopped on my way home from town and tried out a new mexican food place. I am always searching for that special place that serves food like I grew up on in Texas. Judging from the smell wafting out of the door I suspected that I might be close to finding it after all.

I walked in and was confronted by a steamer table with nothing on it that I recognized and my heart sank. Foiled again. There was some kind of things that looked like pitas and I asked the woman what was in them.

"Ohhh...all beef.....special cheese...special sauce. " She said in broken english, grinning at me. Crap. I was at McDonald's.

"Okay well give me two of those and whatever comes with it."

She complied and I ended up with the mexican pitas and a pile of beans and another pile of spanish rice. I grabbed a can of Dr Pepper and out the door I went, $3.50 poorer but still optimistic. The rice and beans looked right.

Well, to say that I quickly ingested what was in that little styrofoam container that passed for a plate would be an understatement. I HOOVERED it. The pitas, still don't know what they are, the rice, the beans, everything was perfect. Delicious. I sat down to watch the weather on television before I went back out to work, because it was cloudling up. Wanted to know if I was going to get wet or not. My sows have finally started farrowing and I'm in and out and back and forth all day.

I have no earthly idea what time the coma hit but the next thing I knew I woke myself up with a loud grating snore, it was an hour later and the sun was shining. I had no intentions of falling asleep. I was sitting straight up looking at the t v and I have the crick in my neck to prove it. Apparently my chin hit my chest and I just basically passed out.

I jumped up feeling all guilty like I'd been caught cheating on a test and basically wandered in a wide circle until my brain woke up and finally found my boots and got them on and went out to check on the ladies.

Now just as a side note, Dr Pepper works like speed on me. If I drink it after six oclock I will be lucky if I get to bed by one a.m, so whatever was in that mexican food must be strong enough to counteract methamphetamines.

I think I now know why folks in Mexico take siestas after lunch. I don't think it's optional, but I do know one thing. There should have been a little sticker on top of that styrofoam container with a warning on it....

'Do not use this product if you must drive or operate heavy machinery.'

As for the restaraunt, I will be going back. I was very impressed with the food. But I will be sure to always get what I order to go and be close to something soft to fall on in case the coma hits before I can find a safe place to land. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Nothing, and I mean NOTHING can compare to good Mexican or Tex-Mex food in my opinion. The trouble is I only found really good stuff in San Diego were I lived for ten years and San Antonio where my son got married and had a chance to visit. I'm sure there are other places but I'm never lucky enough to find them.
Another great story Cindi.

You will be a happy, albeit sleepy, man. Have a plate for me, plenty of sopapillas.....just no guacamole. Eeee. Gross. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I do know some folks who don't care for Pancho's but we're just about regulars there. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I don't know about your locations; only been to the ones in Corpus Christi, Lewisville (no longer there), Carrollton, two in Dallas, and Irving. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

And my wife won't touch the guacamole either, and I love it! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Same here, Fred can eat his weight in it, to me it looks like something you would find behind a sick cow.

I am so jealous that you have a Pancho's. I wrote them a scathing e mail reminding them that people in Florida like Tex-Mex too. Time will tell. My luck they'll probably build one in Tallahassee, only four hundred miles away. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I've been to a couple of those in Houston and it was great food. Maybe if they build one in Fla it'll be in Pcola, that's not too far to drive.

The wifey and I both love gauc, so pile it on /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have since heard that ground cummin (pro: q-men) a popular spice in almost all mexican food dishes, has two side effects one is as an aphrodisiac, the other is as a sleep aid. Bingo. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Bird, I have to say I love Mexican food (Tex Mex), but I don't like Ponchos. Good Tex Mex is hard find really outside the state of Texas. Everything I've tried in Colorado sucked, but I do know of a couple of great places in New Mexico. One of my favorite is Sundance in Red River.
