Just watched an old documentary on Leif Erikson this evening. Told my wife we might need to make a pilgrimage to Newfoundland. Maybe we could stop by!

The holes could have been plugged long ago by something (sawdust+glue?) that disintegrated over time, so no fallen plugs on the ground underneath.

I'd start drilling larger holes, tear up the floor boards, etc...
