"Need a picture of the critter". To get a picture of a badger and still remain at a safe distance. Going to need some fairly specialized photo gear. Plus - badgers are definitely a night time creature.
Long ago I accidentally walked up on a badger. I was about 15-20 feet behind him. He was digging at the base of an old, dead pine tree. When he finally heard me - he pivoted and smiled at me. I was so scared - I didn't realize I'd pissed my pants until I was safely back in the pickup.
In all my life - I had never seen so many pearly white, sharp teeth. I'd never heard a sound like that coming from any animal. I truly thought I was about to be dead meat.
Needless to say - badgers DO NOT like being approached from behind nor quitely.

IMO the most telling aspect is the fact that it was on the porch...how many have had any of the possible suspects actually on their porches ??

I've had raccoons on the porch many times, but this is the best story-
At one point we had a semi feral cat. A really tough cat, all muscle. We'd leave cat food on the porch for her. One evening I heard growling on the porch and there was a big hairy back end of a raccoon pressed up against the screen door. The cat had caught the raccoon eating her food and had it cornered. I had to go get her to let the raccoon go on his way. This was the same cat that ran coyotes off the lawn. She really hated them.

I've had raccoons on my roof. They're not afraid to explore. OP is in the desert, unknown how close neighbors might be. Do hungry Badgers on the hunt approach homes? Do Badgers contract rabies and get confused which might have made it more likely to be on a porch?

Years ago a friend and I were at the home place lake, he was sitting at picnic table under overhang, I was about 20 feet away sitting near boat dock.
We had stopped talking a few minutes about midnight when there was this deep loud ("demonic" I call it) roar between us. I grabbed a small boat anchor on a chain...friend took off a tennis shoe

It was dark but just enough light I saw it was a mountain lion. It slinked off into the woods, we heard sticks breaking.
Next day there were the tracks at waters edge. I assume it didn't attack since there were two of us.

like I said... "when you hear hooves think horses not zebras"...!!!
raccoons and coyotes are extremely keen on seeking food around human environments...pet food left on porches and wet garbage in cans are highly targeted by both...use logic not fantasy...!

I have heard raccoons really make a racket. If you have ever heard a rabbit buy the farm that will get your attention. You hear that stuff this time of the year when sleeping with windows open. I’m always tempted to yell out the window QUIET when I get woke up.
