What to but hydo, shuttle or gear

/ What to but hydo, shuttle or gear #31
Like others have said, my 5103 is a shuttle and I just recently found out (still new to this tractor) that I can start stop reverse using the shuttle without the clutch "with" the expection that if I get too aggresive with the shift I will grind gears. I also like the foot throttle for loader work. As far as price my 5103 was just under $14k. Now the other implements (FEL, box blade and 6' rotory) brought my price tag to just over $20k.

Thank you all for your in put on this situation I am leaning towards a hydro but i figured i could save some cash with a shuttle. I have never used a shuttle and seems confusing to me how it works but i will have to go try one of these out. Now Deere calls theres a syncroshift and Kubota calls theres a glide shift or are these something different?

Haven't tried the Kubota but I believe is something along the lines of 1 lever that you can move forward or back 12 times each way for a total of 24 different positions. Don't hold me to that because it sounds wierd and I'm only going by what I remember from a picture. Though, I do know that the Deere works like this:

You get your main shift stick to the left of the steering wheel, push it forwards for forwards, back for reverse, and the in between is neutral. You dont have to use the clutch to move from neutral to either F or R and you dont need it to switch directly from either one. Drive into your pile, pick up your load while puttin it in neutral or reverse depending on your material, and drive away.

You'll have two shift sticks to the left of you while on the seat. The closest to the back of the tractor is the range selector, A, B, & C. A being your slowest, B being you mid range, and C you can haul *****.

Your second shift stick is the one closest to the front of the tractor. This is a stick with the usual H shift pattern that lets you choose between which of the 4 gears you want to drive in for that range. While moving you can also use the clutch to shift to a lower or a higher gear, they are all sychronized. The range's though are not synchronized.

I've seen some discussions on this forum in the apst about hydro repair.. seems like multi-thousand dollar quotes for replacement are what was quoted.. that seems a tad steep to me...

A brand new (not used, not rebuilt --> brand new) HST transmission for a kubota 34 hp tractor is 2846.44 from the messicks web page. (PN TA240-58004)

I couldn't find the entire GST or FST as an assembly -> I probably am a poor searcher.

There are some valve assemblies that control the GST.
TD060-65830 --- $1228.53
TA040-65017 --- $1440.12
TA040-99034 --- $1293.70
------------total $3962.35

There is obviously more to a GST than valves, so the total price is probably higher. At least I would think so. I don't stick by these numbers totally as I am an admitted poor searcher, but it does look like the HST is not too bad. Bone yards around here want $2500 for a Ford 801 series 4 speed - no clutch, not rebuilt, just used WITH a 500 core! Even old iron is spendy anymore.

My gut tells me that any of the three types of transmissions will probably cost about the same if you roast one. After all, labor will be what is eating you alive if the dealer does the work!

I'm sorry. It was stated above that you had to clutch so I made it known that statement was not true.

John

Does that model still not have a clutch ? just that it is controlled by an elec solinoid ? Yeah, You do not have to push a "clutch" peddal" but it is still clutching ?
Not the same as a full size backhoes "true" shuttle system.

I guess it is all semantics. You are still "clutching" when you move the power shuttle lever to "Neutral", which is not really "Neutral", but is "clutch dis-engaged". The torque converter drive on the 580 is clutchless and is basically like driving an automatic.

Man.. they must see you coming.. you are getting ripped!!

Down here entire 4spd assemblies from the 8n, 6xx/8xx go for about 500$.. heck.. an 8spd from a 5000 can be had in the 1000-2500$ range!!!

In my message i mentioned that I thought a shuttle might be more spendy than a hydro due to complexity..

How dare you ruin a perfectly good discussion full of inuendo, urban legends, and "vapor" references to previous hydro failures by bringing up the facts. Shame on you!;)

About the same here too.... You can usually buy a non-runner 800, THE ENTIRE TRACTOR, transmission included for far less than $2500 (+$500 core)

Comparing apples to apples though, the 3 types of trannies for the same "species" of tractor, in late model form, the INSTALLED cost using NEW parts is probably roughly the same. Most rental shops around here have hydros, claiming they're less likely to get torn up by a less than experienced operator. Not sure about that one either.
