What to charge a neighbor for mowing?

Some things in life are worth more than money. Forget about the kid. Whatever his story is, this is between you and the lady. He can think/do whatever he wants.

If the lady can afford $60 every 2 wks, take it. Or do every 3rd or 4th one for free. And I'd do the limbs to make it faster easier.

Maybe you can enlist other neighbors, some kids from church to help with the limb removal to make it easier on you.

My pet peeve is folks who charge old people a lot to do stuff, knowing they can't do it themselves. Yeah, most can afford it. Some can't. $60 is way less than a professional outfit would charge to mow it. And if she suggested going 2 wks, they'd want $120!

It sounds like the enjoyment you get out of making her day would be worth more than $60. Take the $60 for fuel and some cold drinks. You can enjoy a glass of tea with the lady when you finish. Probably hear a lot of old stories (repeated each time you mow).

I do stuff for my neighbors for free. It's my part of making our area a nice place to live. I loan tools (not the tractor though I'll come do stuff for them) and I borrow tools.

Today, the neighbor is helping me load a couch and bed to take to my kids at college. He might owe me the hand, but we don't look at it that way. I help with his family and he helps with mine.

I'd take the minimum amount I thought was fair for the mowing, and probably cut the limbs and stuff for free if it sped up the mowing. You could do the limbing at your leisure, and cut grass every coupla weeks or ever how often ya'll worked it out. Even at $60 per cutting, that's $30/hr for cutting grass, if it only takes a couple of hours. To me that would be OK, would probably do it for $40. I DON'T know going prices for yardwork though.
It's good of you to consider her financial situation.
There's lots of unable folks who need help from us able ones. Wish more people (myself included) took time to help folks like you're trying to do.

Thanks for the replies, gave me an idea.

I'll end up charging her what she was paying the guy from last year, do the brush and limb cutting a little at a time when I mow at no additional "charge", then save all the money she's given me for some sort of "present" for her at the end of the year (with the sales invoice so she could return it if she'd like). I would like to think it would make her day.

I'd give the "give back" some thought. Some people, especially elder, like to feel they can still "pay their own way" as a matter of pride.

midlif,

Good point.

I like the idea of giving the lady a gift too, but maybe a meal out or a nice plant for her landscaping.
