What to charge a neighbor for mowing?

/ What to charge a neighbor for mowing? #21
I do the same thing, up home I mow the neibors place, he is sinlge and 80 something, gets around poorly but likes to keep every thing outside neet/clean. I mow for free and trim somewhat, but probably not 100% as nice as he would like but I don't charge him and even pay the gas ect too. he offeres money many times, I always say the same thing, helping is REWARD enough. I also end up chatting for hrs if not carefull. each time when I attempt an exscape he wants to pay me something, /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif many times accept a token amount, he can more than afford it but at same time it almost would be like getting paid by a grandfauther. all his family is long gone and only distant cusins. I told ihm I remember him and help ihm as a friend, ^ I'll get rewarded later in life and or after life as I can look back & know I treated people the way I would like to be treated...

anyhow I like the idea of saving the mowing cost ^ getting her a good mothersday gift or x-mas gift ect. also she probably would like to go to a few BBQs ect, I also invite the neobor to dinner BBQs and to holidays almost always they are accepted and he is nearly a part of OUR family... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Being nice should be considered universal

Everyone thanks for the response.

I forgot to add that at first, I told her I wouldn't charge her, but she INSISTED that she pays me, and wants to pay "the going rate".

I met her by helping her find homes for some stray kittens she found, and she's "demanding" that I take the payment or she dosen't want me to to the work.

I realize "pride" can be an issue.

I will leave it at $60 every two weeks, and figure out how/what /where to get her something. As mentioned though, have to be careful on how I "present" the "gift", or just have my wife and I take her out to a couple of nice restaurants.

Pineridge, your right, should be nice EVERYWHERE, due unto others....

My mom past away, but the way I look at it is if it were my dad gone and if my mom was all alone, I would like to think that there would be "someone" who would like to help her out if she ever needed it and I wasn't around.

I've found that we all get our "rewards" for everything we do in life. If you need the money to live, take the moneyand use it to live. If its "extra" and you don't need it, give it to the charity/church of your choice. Your lady friend with feel she's not a charity case and it will make you feel good too...trust me on this. Figure it this way: The man that wouldn't do it for $60 and you are standing side by side in front of St. Peter one day. He looks at both of you and asks "How many people did you feed that were hungry? How many people did you clothe that were naked? How many people did you visit that were lonely?" Don't worry about the other guy, what's your answer?? Sorry to get a tad maudlin here, but it really is the truth.....BobG in VA

Make a trade. Trade her the grass in the field for the mowing job. Bale the hay and sell it. She gets her yard and field mowed, you get paid, no-one is out of money.
