I would let nature take it's course. Depending on where you are located, vultures, crows, coyotes, etc. should have it gone pretty quick.
What to do about dead deer?

Well the State Police finally came out and did some investigating, meanwhile a neighbor guy wanted the antlers so he disposed of the carcass.
I've got a pretty good idea who did it. We've got some neighbors who like to let their unruly young teenage boys play with their rifles unsupervised. Wouldn't put it past them to take a potshot at a deer.
I would have let it rot but it was too close to our driveway where kids have to walk, dogs, etc. Thanks for all the helpful postings!

2 months ago we started smelling a bad oder of dead animal, about 4 day prier to ...,when we turn our dogs out they would work there way over to the 6 ft. high board fence that divides our property from the neighbors, The dogs seem to want to hang around over there sniffing, we figered they picked up a sent off a squirrel, OK now on to the day we started smelling the dead smell, I traced it down to just the other side of the fence was a cat that had apparently been chased out off our yard by the dogs and he climbed and jumped over to the other side spearing himself with a sharp stick as he landed on the ground, ,,,all swollen about to bust, So I wasn't about to touch it, because I've seen what can happen, Xploowy...
so I went for the tractor and a load of dirt dumped it just over the fence, actually I wasn't satisfide until I got 3 bucket loads of dirt on top of that thing, Incidentally I talked to my neighbor a few days later he said he didn't own a cat but had been seeing it hanging around, I ask if he could try cleaning off his side of the fence, he agreed to do so, but never did.... so about 2 weeks ago I took down several of the fence panels and clean it myself with the bushhog, being careful not to drive over and chop up the cat grave... :yuck: I didn't think about using lime,
