If you splitting knotty or tough wood, I highly recommend renting or buying one
with a "two stage pump". I lost my old home made splitter in a fire last Jan, didn't have the time rebuilding, so I bought a Troybilt 27 ton w/2 stage pump, Honda 5.5, and it will stand up and split those big ones. I'm very happy with this one. Pulls real nice too behind the 4 wheeler. Price was around $1,400.00
I wouldn't own one without a 2 stage pump...period!
