helped neighbor clean out barn this weekend, acquired a homemade logsplitter for my efferts, unusual build on splitter but the I beam and 4x24 ram seems to be fine, was thinking strip it down to beam weld receiver hitch tube to one end and in the middle, replace hoses and run it off aux. pto on the 425, unfortunately it would have a cycle time of roughly 40 seconds, I do not heat with wood so it would not be used as a log splitter,possiblely pipe bending, bead breaking, trimming branches occasionally, what other mischeif could I get into with it? ideas - thoughts

Run it off the main PTO. Much higher flow rate will reduce the cycle time. I think its 12 GPM versus 4 for the Aux PTO. You probably thought of this and wanted to save money on the valve.

I think the PT425 has 8GPM at 2500PSI on the main PTO and 3 or 4 GPM at 2500PSI on the aux PTO.

Retraction times will be slower and will have to be calculated with the rod diameter whereas the extension time will be constant based on bore size.

All 4" bore cylinders will push at 2.5" per second at 8GPM, 0.9" per second at 3GPM and 1.2" per second at 4 GPM.

So, even at the lowest GPM of 3 a 4" cylinder that is 24" long will only take 26.6 seconds to extend.

At 8GPM it will only take 9.6 seconds.

With a 4 in bore and a 2 in rod, and 3000 psi

Push force = 37,699 lbs
Pull force = 28,274 lbs

Extension time 2.5 ips [ in per sec ]
Retraction time 3.3 ips

now I wonder how big of sapling/limb I can pinch off ? when time/weather permits I will be investigating the control valve to see if it is a open center valve then plumb it into the main pto circuit with extra long hoses so I can use the beam in horizontal and vertical positions heh heh tell my overly curious neighbor that its a walnut cracker :cool::D

Has anyone figured out how to reconfigure my Lackender mini-hoe so it can be a log splitter too?

Exactly what are you trying to do. Can you make a log splitter out of the boom, NO. Can the mini-hoe pick up a 3ph log splitter, maybe.

I think the suggestion of running the cylinder off the aux hydraulics will cycle the cylinder quicker with a valve I can operate from the seat, weld a receiver tube to one end and in the middle opposing the cylinder so I can use the ram in a horizontal and vertical position, I will have to change the wedge,someone welded it to the ram, will make so I can bend pipe, change post install 4 way splitting wedge, so I can shear saplings if needed, basically trying to make a do all attachment , probably be lucky to use it enough to pay for the new hoses and fittings. also cutting off all excess steel bracketry not needed, the 425 currently lifts it without a fuss ie: 5 hp briggs-small wheeled axle assembly- valve-hoses-towing hitch-pump, oddly enough there was no resivoir I am guessing it did not see much use, maybe the operator did not appreciate having split wood popping out at him due to the wedge being on the ram ( years ago left a splitter attached to the truck, broke both rear tailights out when a chunk of elm popped out of the wedge, a lesson well learned)

Cylinder speed is determined by pump flow in GPM's. So therefore, the PTO circuit would give better cycle times.
