Hi all, I have some new property that is very gravely and sandy. We are building on top of a hill on my property and it has some faily steep inclines that will be disturbed with excavation. Right now there are weeks and wildflowers growing. I need to plant something after excavation and would like to go with a grass/clover of some kind. I am in central michigan and most likely wont be doing any seeding this spring.

TIA

Sand & gravel - probably low moisture - perhaps wind damage to young shoots - PH of soil ?

Think a grass/clover mixture with deep roots would be best too start with. After a few years a bit of tilth will build up and other grasses could be introduced as long as cultivation is minimal.

Hmm, I'm thinking chicory or cedar trees!! Those 2 things will grow anywhere!!!

Someone once told me that with the proper application of fertilizer grass can be grown almost anywhere. With that said there are also a lot of very aggressive ground covers that may also fill your needs.

Check with your local ag dept or state University extension. Most state universities run a Master Gardener program, to provide just the answers you need.

I'm not sure what your after, but if it's waist high ground cover, MINT is very aggressive, spreads fast, and smells good.

For trees, I can't help you but others can.

At our North Carolina mountain cabin, we planted some mint in a small area about 16 years ago. In a few years, it had completely taken over the area, so we dug it out. In a year it had come back, so we dug it all out. Next year there was more, so we dug it ALL out. It took 8 years, but it's baaaacckk...
