What type PTO?

ahh.. ok.. now I see what you guys are talking about, and why they call it dual clutch then.

Here's an example of a dual clutch that provides independent PTO.

I don't know if you got a chance to look at the PDF attachments I posted earlier. it is exactly like what Rick Just posted. Two release mechanism, one inside the other, kind of like two input shafts in either "live" or"independent". I also posted the hand clutch mechanism as well.

i got it now. it's a foot clutch for one section and a hand fo rthe other.. 2 seperate release mechanisims.. but both stages of the clutch are up fron together..

not what i was envisioning much earlier with a 2 position foot clutch that operated both... or a single followed by another single down the line..

Yeah, it's the cheap way to make a live PTO independent.

yep.. economy independent pto via a 2 stage clutch. and since the hand lever isn't tied to the foot clutch in any way like in a conventional 2 stage clutch you can cl;utch the pto any time drive train going or not.. so .. really.. independent in the full sense..

i'm kinda surprised this didn't come out as independent pto in this form way back when 2 stage clutches first hit.

video on PTOs and ORCs -

YouTube - Kubota Power Take Off (PTO) and Overrun Clutch

So now, should I invest in an ORC? I don't currently have one on my PTO.

As the video said, it will prevent the load from turning the PTO backwards but since I only run a bushhog and a finishing mower (at this time) they aren't going to run backwards anyhow. Unless I hit something at which point they should stop but not go backwards. Or would/could hitting something and the blades stopping suddenly cause the shaft to lock which could cause problems in the gears for the PTO?

When you use your bushhog does your tractor get pushed forward after you depress the clutch until the rotary blade stops? If it does, then yes I would buy one. It makes for a much safer tractor.

Kubota had it maybe 20 years ago.

i'm thinking even earlier.. like 50's

since 2 stage clutch technology was there.. would have been an easy way for independent pto.

other methods were pinion clutches and all.. but i'm surprised this did not take off way more back then..

2 ways to work this...throwout bearing would release the clutch, or, it would apply pressure to engage. Either way, it's a lot of force on the crank thrust bearing. Kubota used to instruct to release the clutch via the handle, shift the PTO off, then re-engage the clutch. On newer machines, like the TN's they beefed up the thrust bearings to handle the continuous thrust.
