I have this old grinder that I am not sure what it was used for. Obviously it sharpened a tool or some type cutter. The stone tapers off on both sides and there is a sliding tool rest. Maybe a cutting chisel or something like that?

It had to be short because of where the crank is located. Anybody know??

I believe you are correct. With horse draw mowers you had to keep them sharp. We would touch them up with a flat file daily and knock off and rivet new blades on whenever they got banged up beyond filing or grinding. The three or four out at the tip end took it the worst. There was a grinder like that up in the attic workshop of our our farm house but the stone was worn down beyond use.

Well that makes sense. I found this at our first house and I like old stuff so I put it up and packed it away when we moved. Dug it out over the weekend.

Thanks for the info.

Yep, sickle sharpner. Have one in my garage that my dad used back in the day. He would place it on the picnic table and sharpen the entire sickle bar.
