What weight plate do you have on your pickup?

In CT and MA, it doesn't matter what you register the truck for, as long as you don't exceed the GVW of the truck data plate itself. If you have a heavier load in the truck than the GVW plate is marked for, they will ticket you for carrying a "unsafe load". If the truck registration isn't high enough for the weight load, then they hit you with another ticket for being overloaded. They have no mercy on the commercial haulers, and will give a individual a break sometimes. Some states don't issue anything but commercial plates to pick up trucks. If you happen to have one of those commercial plates on your pick up truck, then they hold you to the commercial truck regulations. I know a fellow that was coming through CT with a pick up and an empty trailer on his way back home. He got pulled into the weigh station and had to sit it out for 8 hours, since he didn't have a log book. He didn't even have a commercial license, but they ran him through the ringer just the same. Some say that they are doing their job.... others say that they are going beyond reasonableness.....

I have lived in Arizona all my life so this may sound like dumb question but why is the vehicle registration fee more for the heavier vehicles? In AZ the higher the value of the vehicle the more the registration.

Several states (please don't ask me to name them, because I can't) figure that the heavier the truck, the more wear and tear you'll create on the roads. Thus, you are charged more for a heavier plate. Here in IN, your truck cannot weigh more than what the designated amount on your plate says. As I said, my truck currently weighs more empty than what my plate says. I'm asking for trouble if I don't change that. I'm just wondering what amount would be proper. At our DMV, they seem happy to sell me a 16k plate; just to be safe.

The trouble with this logic is there are people paying more for a 3000 pound Pickup than others are paying for a 5000 pound caddy.

My truck shows GVWR of 8800 on the door sticker. When I lived in Indiana (can you relate Dargo?), it was licensed as a Truck 7 (7000 I believe). When we got our camper and I started dragging my tractor around I considered changing it to Truck 9 (9000 lbs) but didn't. Moved to Michigan and basically it's the same, plated as a lighter duty truck. My take is the license branches don't pay attention. I suppose I could be in violation but I'll just plead ignorance.

Casual observations suggest few personal use 3/4 and 1 ton trucks are plated to match their ratings. Maybe the license branches pay more attention to a commercial use truck?

I'm running 10K plates for my F350 4x4 crew cab. I've never weighed the truck empty but she's around 8500# or so empty. I only pull my 5th wheel camper so I'm ok here in NC. They don't worry about RV trailers. The cost is $100 per year for 10K.

How do you have the registration for an 8800lb GVW truck at 16,000lbs? Does that include a trailer weight of 7200lbs for a combined weight. It would be wrong to have that much weight on a truck rated at 8800lb GVW.

Two times now I've stopped by my local DMV only to find that there was about a 2 hour wait each time. It's no wonder why I've always used the online renewal in our state! Get this, our local DMV is even closed on Wednesdays. What's up with that?!

Are they open on Saturdays??? If so, it is to give the people working there 2 days off. In CT, the MV people move to different branches each day, and some of the branches are only open 2 or 3 days a week. You learn to adjust. It's government being conservative with the spending. MA takes in 70 Million and spend 7 million to run the entire DMV.... taxation hidden...
