What wood did you use for your porch?

Our screened porch has a baldcypress tongue and groove floor. It's on the older section of the house, so has been in use for 44 years, unfinished, and never touched except for sweeping, and I power washed it once. Looks great, although one board does have a split.

My parents house has 2 porches with painted white pine floors that are approximately 125 years old. Covered open sided porches but paint is maintained.

I would try an oil based finish and not use a clear film finish. Even the high quality UV resistant varnishes will after a few years, look poor, and need sanding before refinishing.

I have built several decks in my lifetime and always used either clear cedar or tight knot cedar. 2 by and 5/4in as prices have gone up. I am getting ready to redo and expand our deck and I am 99% sure I am going with Ipe. My neighbor had Ipe installed and it is a beautiful silver after about 3 years of PNW weather. I think I will keep mine oiled to keep it that rich brown look but even if I falter, no big deal. You can always bring it back to new looking.

I personally want hidden fastener install. He went with drilled holes top side. If you have a covered porch, you might want to look at the tongue and groove style as well. All I know, this will be the last deck I do!
