What work do on truck before selling or trading in?

I'm a land surveyor and we have had two suburbans at my work. The truth is I prefer them over a pickup, the cost of pickups is just so attractive that we have moved to leasing them.

Spoken like someone that has never owned a suburban.

I agree Duffster. I never really like the Suburban personally but hey they have a place like with my Co-Pilot. He has a Yukon XL, same thing as a Burban. Anyway he has 4 kids and campers, trailers, and the same toys all of us on this site have. Did I mention his daughter is the shortest at 5-11 and only 13. Both his sons are over 6-4 and growing every day. His wife is a even 6'. You could not shoe horn them into a pickup all at once if you tried. It is the only thing that can get the job done for them except driving 2 vehicles every where they go.

There's one thing you can do to make it more attractive to a potential buyer, and that's give it a good "detailing" first! A clean vehicle gives the mental impression to most people that you care about your vehicle and hence you have probably looked after it better than most..and therefore it's worth more! It's cheap to do and it does work. :D

Detail it when it's got accident damage and a hole in the passenger door? Talk about putting lipstick on a pig.:D

Thanks again for all of your opinions.

I'll probably be trading in as-is. Except today my roommate had the rear breaks fixed. I was home on Monday for the night and pulled my biggest trailer. Decided the brakes needed to be fixed now. Safety first.

As I stated earlier, I'm never home. I usually fly. So Tahoe stays home. Trying a private sale would be too much hassle.

Since a few have suggested a pickup. I'll justify.
-Need a 4x4.
-Sometimes I need move a handful of people and/or luggage.
-I have some items that do best when climate controlled.
-I can title a Suburban as a passenger car in WI. For one it痴 cheaper. And can avoid many DOT regs.
-I also need a vehicle that can be socially multipurpose. SUVs can be OK for a fancy dinner and that kind of drabble or the on the job site. I'm a blue collar guy that finds himself too often upity places.
-Need the towing.

If anybody happens to stumble upon a ?5-?6 Suburban (or Yukon XL) with an 8.1L. Let me know. I値l be in Dallas and Austin for the next two months or anywhere within 4-5 hours of Madison, WI. Drop me a line.

Good luck finding a 8.1L All I ever see is 6.0's I imagine if anyone has a 8.1 they are keeping it locked down.

You should also consider the Ford Excursion. Plenty out there with the V-10 and most Excursions have 3.73 gears. I looked long and hard for a V-10 Excursion 1 year ago with 4:10's but they are hard to find. The 3.73 gears will probably suit you fine. I know you are probably a GM man but the Excursion is 1.25 times the truck the Burban is but you may not need something that stout!

Sadly, Older Tahoes aren't going for much at all out there. We have a 97 Tahoe with 40,000 miles and last I checked (Edmunds.com) it was worth a wopping 3531 trade in, 4436 private party, 6012 dealer retail. My wife bought it brand new for 35,000. It sits in our garage and still looks brand new. Needless to say, we will just keep it! As far as the OP fixing up his 01 Tahoe and investing 3k to do it, I'd say it probably isn't worth it. He will most likely never benefit from it. Jim

This place is not far from where I live: Sabattus Auto and Truck Sales

He has an 8.1 but its an 02 and the milage is over 100k. I have been window shopping for a few months for a new truck here. My buddy bought a truck from them a few years ago and was impressed. He does a lot of volume of high quality used trucks and is very particular on which trucks he brings in, most of them Chevrolet 3/4 tons. He gives free carfax with each one and this one shows that it spent most of its life in Arizona so should be rust free for the most part. I know its not exactly what you are looking for but I thought I would post it since I remembered he had one when I was looking a few days ago. He had a few 3/4 ton Suburbans a few weeks ago. I think more than one had an 8.1. Goodluck on your search.

You will never recover that $3K on your trade in. I just traded a '93 Ford ranger 3.0L 5 speed 4X4 w/ a Leer cap. It had 170K and was in questionable shape; windshield leaked, a bearing noise in the front end, clearcoat peeling off the hood, The trans I installed two years [didn't replace the original!] ago crunches when shifting 1 - 2 too fast...

I figured the lowball $400.00 was just a way to reduce my sales tax and eliminated the hassle of selling it. The KBB listed it as $2,300 in good condition...

Two days later the dealer put it, cleaned up some, on the back of his lot w/ $2,100 in the window...More power to him if he can sleep at night after selling if for anything close to that amount!
