What would you do to prepare to horde & store a few years worth of diesel?

I live in Colorado & am aware of the summer vs. winter blend stuff. Probably getting it this fall, so it should be a winter blend anyway. Will make sure one way or another.

Not sure if Power Service white bottle would be enough to get me through the winter with a summer blend. Any thoughts? Not that I'm planning on trying.

I have considered the implications of gelled fuel in the tractor. I use it for plowing in the winter & a few chores, but nothing critical. I could get by if it was down for a bit without huge problems.

I'd say Power Service could handle it ... here is their tech sheet from their site:

If your tank was in the ground hopefully you would get some insulation effect that way. Above ground with the wind blasting it could get interesting I guess. Ex

There are some pretty hefty EPA implications of burying a tank I don't want to deal with. I just measured & might be able to move the tank inside the barn instead of outside. Won't do much about the thermal swings though.

Farm diesel just hit 1.99/gal here. I've been waiting to fill my new tank. With WTI crude closing at 38 and change today, I think I'll wait a bit longer.

Just caught up on this thread and I have to say that you have done what I'm working on doing. We've started the garden, but we're still working on the solar well. I've started building the canning/ processing room and hope to have it done by spring. We are expanding our chicken operation and have just started incubating eggs last week. No idea if it will work or not, but eventually we will figure it out. We have five horses and if push comes to shove, they will replace the tractor if fuel gets too hard to find or expensive. We just got two goats and plan on increasing to over a dozen at least. Fish are in the ponds. After the canning/processing room is done, a 16x16 food pantry/huricane shelter is in the plans. I wasn't sure about the roof until I saw your pics, and now I want it to be concrete!!!

I don't think the world is going to come to an end, but I do worry that we might go though a period of no work and a lack of items on the shelf. My thinking is that I would rather work towards being as self sufficient as I can instead of hoping nothing will ever go wrong. Not just politically, but mother nature can be pretty severe when she wants to be.

If I saw something coming on the horizon, I would fill my 200 gallon diesel storage tank, but otherwise, I just fill it when it's empty. I would also fill all 12 of my five gallon gas cans for my small generator. Hopefully I'll get a diesel generator one of these days, but for now, my little Honda is great
