Let me add -

Would it be legal to tow it that far when its NOT designed for highway travel? ie - no lights, safety markers etc

Perfectly legal.

Besides most newer implements have lights and markers.

that is a LONG way and relatively SLOW speeds..

IF you replaced the tires with something designed for 'high speed' highway so you could drive faster and possibly do it..

BUT Id love to see the looks of ppl faces as you were going down the road..

There would be no need to change tires to tow at a decent speed. We tow all day everyday at highway speed or close to it with implement tire and don't have any issues. People think nothing of it.

NOT 900 miles! the farm implement tires will fail if you try to tow with them rolling much over 50 mph for that distance. and 900 miles IS going to involve some interstate and I would not be caught dead on an interstate unless I was able to run the speed limit AT LEAST!

There's regular balloon implement tires, and there's speed-rated implement tires - balloon ones aren't so good, if you're close to rated weight. A set of takeoff pickup tires on spare wheels, a spare set of wheel bearings, and I bet you'd be fine. I've seen guys pull wheel-boom sprayers on 18.4-26 lug tires under the tank and imp. ribs on the booms from MT to Oregon before, one claims he got a speeding ticket! Balers and such aren't always weighted like a trailer, though, it might not be the nicest pulling rig around, either - a nice little deckover behind a 3/4 ton would be a fairly pleasant trip.....

I think you could do it and I would start with a full set of spare tires, after all those on the baler are 4 years old. The baler is heavy on the drivers side so that tire will wear faster than the other one but 55 MPH should be no problem for a new tire and properly greased and adjusted axle bearings.
NOW as to it being cost effective to make an 1800 mile trip to get it, if would need to be really cheap. Lets just use the government approved deduction of 45cents per mile(I think that is right, may be a little more now) write off for mileage expense = $810 plus meals and hotel. It could be done in 2 very long days but maybe add one day on the return so 3 nights of hotel @ $100 per nigh (300) plus 9 meals @ even $15 per meal =$135 per my figures will cost you roughly $1250 to get it back assuming no tire blow outs and no new tires.
You would almost have to get it free to justify the cost of transport.

I thought it was a pretty good buy ... 2008 Massey Ferguson "Hesston 1835" inline ... $9500 ... New is about $17,900 and average used is about $12,500

So many factors besides the hauling ... current weather conditions being the biggest factor ... we are near drought conditions and rain does not look promising ... so it may have very well sat until next year ... even with my irrigation on the field here at the house I'd like to get buy with the JD 346 for another year.

I've finally got a 40 acre field clean and will be turning it into square bales ... that would give me 60 acres of quality squares ... if it rains.

So ... for now thats the dill pickle.

I guess you missed the '08 "inline" baler part.

I'd a done it.

Really no reason why it wouldn't tow faster than that.
