What\'s coming after DVD?

Now that DVD is becoming popular, what's next? It won't be long before DVD recorders are affordable and people are going to want DVD camcorders, but they would have to be big enough to accept a DVD disk, which means they would have to be bigger than a Mini-DV camcorder. Based on what happened with the floppy disk getting smaller and smaller, is Mini-DVD the next big craze? You can bet your life savings that as soon as I buy a DVD player and/or recorder, they’ll come out with something smaller and better!

Yup! Regardless of its use, if it's got electronics in it, it's outdated the minute you walk out the store and be half the price in 6 months. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Well, as far as camcorders are concerned ... I would think that since we already have mini-DV ... I've had a digital video movie camera for 3+ years already ... going to something larger like DVD would be a step backwards.
I guess that using some of the compression technology would give us longer than the current 1/2 hour limit per cassete/cartridge ... but first we need better battery technology. My battery always gives out before my cartridge is full.
Digital video is definitely a whole lot kewler than vhs!!! or 8MM !!!

I think you'll see DVD around for awhile. However, with that said. The amount of information that you'll be able to place on that DVD will increase tremendously. By this time next year, the price of DVD recorders will be within reach of the masses.

We're already seeing a MINI-DVD format being utilized by Hitachi in their Digital Camcorders. I would wait a bit before jumping on to this application.

Incidently, if you can buy it - It's already outdated. But don't fear. There is a sweet spot (money to performance ratio) for all of this stuff. Look at Digi-cams. Sony's recently released 4Mega-Pixel camera was just lowered $100.00. Approximately six or so months after it's release.

It will still have a useable life of around three or so years. That's about all you can expect these days. HDTV is not coming on a fast and furious as once expected, but it's still coming. So, your older TVs (2002) have a bit more life in them until they'll eventually need to be replaced in six to ten years.

One more thing, Sony also introduced a new format that is about 30% the size of MINI-DV while improving quality. These are interesting times!

I was reading somewhere that we basicly have reached the limit of our current battery technology. They were talking to the guy that invented it and he said it was suppose to have been replaced by something by now but no one has developed anything better yet. I think we will be stuck with what we have as far as portable items till someone builds a new battery. These toys today eat them right up but at least Sony has a good rechargable. Just have to carry a couple of them. I think the next thing after DVD will just be a chip, similar to smart media or compact flash. DVD players are basicly computers anyways so why not just add a compact flash slot in the dvd player so you can use the disc or chip when they develope it?

I think that everything in this space will converge to the Net.

All songs, all movies, all media. Your entertainment center will be a Net appliance.

Recording? Standards will become far less an issue and proprietary formats will be easy to use. Just download them or use a web service automatically.

All gadgets bought today in the Media arena will be replace by Internet based programs.

I know where your coming from. I've been playing that game since I was in high school. Started out getting 8-tracks, pretty soon they were obsolete. Had just about replaced all my 8-tracks with cassettes, when along comes CD's. I bought a Sony beta-max player when I was in the Marines, that went obselete. Got a pretty god collection of VHS tapes, now out with the DVD's. Seems the same with computers. I started out with a C64, and thought it was really great, now a Pentium 4 and wondering when it will be obselete.

I just read about two technologies that are just around the corner. The first one is violet lasers that will allow up to 100GB of data on a DVD-sized disk. This means that they will be able to record a full-length HDTV movie (and then some) on a single disk. It will probably have a different format than current DVD's.

The second technology (and it sounds a bit further off, if ever), uses a multiple-laser technique to record images holographically. Interesting stuff, as it doesn't have "tracks" per say, but instead distributes the images through-out the medium. Could also be "recorded" on medum(s) other than a DVD-type thingy. However, the technique also yields about 100BG on a DVD-sized piece of plastic.
