What's going on in California?

I haven't been to the area you mentioned, but there are a few of those "egg-beater" windmills on the Altamont. And yes -- they are totally cool to watch.

Also, have you ever gotten close to one of the more recent 2-blade jobs? They are enormous!!! I've never seen the specs, but each blade must be 60 feet or more! /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

Sometimes I wonder how people stay on the roads with all that distraction going on all around them.

Re: What\'s going on in California?

Harv,
I think we all need steered to the obvious sometimes. Short story about obvious hitting you in the nose. Three years ago I put up my pole barn, 45x63 in what I thought was a great place. Easy access to the stalls, roundpen, and outdoor pens. Well what I forgot to notice was that this blocked our view out the back of the house of the rest of the property. I was looking out the kitchen window after it was done and told my wife that that wasn't very smart to block the view like that. She told me that she thought of that but figured I knew what I was doing. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif. Got a nice building but bad view.

Will we trade clean air for blackouts?

Yep, the governor of Washington issued an executive order to ban the burn ban. Blackouts "1", Clean Air "0"

del,

What burn ban in WA are you speaking of?

In western Washington, just about every time in the winter when the sky is clear and the temperature drops the dry heavy air forms a stagnant cover and a county by county burn ban is issued.

The "ban against the ban" is the Exectutive Order Gary Locke issued yesterday to allow diesel generators to begin producing electrical power.

Looks like its payback time for all the harassment we have been sending to the Left Coast/w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif. Michiganders heating bills are going up 60% and property taxes are up 8.5%./w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif Is this the Clinton legacy or the beginning of the George W. legacy./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Re: What\'s going on in California?

Government interfearance with private business is what is going on in California. I recently attended a conference of utilities and their regulators. "Deregulation" /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif as it is called in the Gov't. venicular is simply the State and Fed's controlling the distribution price charged by the utility and forcing the sale of their power plants to outside concerns under the guise of conflict of interest. Now the new owners can sell to whom they please at the price the market will bear. Meanwhile, the utility that is still actually regulated by politicians (that have never had to work from a balance sheet or turn a profit in their lives) goes bankrupt selling something for less than it costs them to buy it. If this were a totally government run operaton, they would simply raise your taxes to pay for it. If they cut taxes in the state, the utility could sell its' goods for less, but then who would pay for all those regulators to watch over the evil utilities? The bark eaters have prevented more power plants from being built through support of bad legislation or regulations so strict and off the wall it becames cost prohibitive to build and maintain them. They want electric cars too /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif, I wonder where the juice will come from, recycled toilet paper? What it boils down to is this...government has to stay out of private business and peoples lives and reduce the tax burden it imposes so that industry can charge less for its' products and people have more money to spend. The loud left need to move to the millions of acres Clinton has just taken off limits to the rest of the country and build their tree houses [without using nails or wood] and live off the land along with other animals with inferrior mental capabilities. I remember when the telephone industry was broken up by the gov't..my bill doubled and the service stinks. One can only hope they don't succeed in busting up Microsoft or taking over health care /w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif. As Will Rogers once said "it's tough to put the [censored] back in the horse".. just ask some of the good folks in California!

Re: What\'s going on in California?

Cutter, welcome to the board. I have to agree, "deregulation" is anything but.

Re: What\'s going on in California?

It is a completely different mindset to run an operation (government department) than a company. First, if you can't afford to do what you want you just raise taxes. Second, if you have problems, who cares, it's not your money!

A lot of congressional types seem to be lawyers, what would be nice is if that was prohibited, and the lawyers were hired on a case by case basis to make the laws that the previous "normal" citizens want to pass into legally acceptable format. But of course this would assume that there are people in private industry and citizens that want to take on such a task. It seems that a well meaning person gets stomped into the ground pretty quick these days in the state houses. If you don't tow the party line, you don't get the party's money.

I keep hoping though!

ps. Happened to drive by the Renton Washington Boeing Parking lot tonight. It's a huge lot, as big as multiple football fields. NO cars were in it. (sat night). It was lit up like you see a high school football stadium during a game. Super bright. Hmm, I thought we were supposed to be cutting back? Wish I had the digital camera with me, would have been a good shot to try to get the media to post.
