What's in a "foot"? (Surveying)

get a metric ruler. It becomes much easier to imagine when you can hold it in your hand. :) And STOP converting. Never ever convert anything.

You have a point... Every time my wife says she's gonna put a foot up my a**, I don't worry, 'cause her foot is only about only about six inches long...

And...when you say the same thing to her?

What is REALLY ironic. is I am a conservative AND I WANT to move to the metric system. ANd I want to STOP converting. I want to throw away the imperial tape measures. Yes, just put them in the round file and buy new metric ones.

AND on top of all of that I am old. I am supposed to be "set in my ways", and here I am wanting to jump off of the metric cliff. And I have wanted it all my life. I think the system of weights and measures we use is INSANE, and I want to get away from it and have always wanted to do so. I just can't get many to follow me. And they cant really tell me why.

Yes of course the C temp scale is a little coarser than the F scale.. So what.? Can you tell the difference between 65 degrees and 66 degrees F? No you cannot. And that is what we are talking about here. And if you need precise measurement of temp, we can always say 20.3 degrees C now can't we? or 20.321579 degrees if that is what is needed.

"follow me folks" and I will lead you into the new world... And we will all be better off for it. Jeez... I sound like a "progressive". dadgumit....

Until a wave of logic changes the US measurement system, here is a mental temperature conversion chart.
This is for Celsius to Fahrenheit conversion:

For any Fahrenheit number:

Double it
Subtract 10% (round off as necessary)
Add 32
This equals the correct Celsius temp.

Can be easily done in your head,... and is exact.

Re: What's in a "foot"? (Surveying)

A KILObyte is 1000 byte's and a MEGAbyte is 1000 KILObytes or 1 Million

Look me in the eye and tell me that is not metric.
Actually, those are marketing numbers. An actual gigabyte is 1024 megabytes, not 1000 megabytes.
That's why your "500 gigabyte" hard drive will actually only hold 488 gigabytes when you plug it into a computer.

Marketing says 500000 megabytes equals 500 gigabytes.
The computer says 500,000 megabytes is actually 488 gigabytes.

I recall being taught that 100 deg F was established as a standard because it was the normal body temperature of a cow.

Sounded good to me at the time. What could be a more logical thing to standardize 100 at? :confused3:

1000 or 1024, both use “metric” ( base 10 exponential ) prefixes: kilo, mega, giga....
