i like inch/pound and certainly see no shame whatsoever in not knuckling under to other countries. If they want to deal with us they need to change.

Therein lies the rub. They won't change; merely go to somebody else who operates on the same standards of measurement. We are still the world economic leader, but there are others-most notably China- who are catching up so the ball is in our court. We can either keep up with the times or become a has been nation.

18mm is ISO norm, you save a few grams and some cost vs the old DIN that uses 19mm head.

I understand why, it saved them $0.03 per vehicle, so someone got a bigger bonus at the end of the year.
Its a pain because my 1/2" drive impact sockets all skip from 17MM to 19MM, so I had to buy a new set to get a 18MM socket.

The imperial system is absolute foolishness. I can understand being reluctant to change. I still use it, but can’t we at least admit how much better metric is?

I don’t know what tool makers have against 18 mm stuff. I had to buy a separate one.

That's exactly right. Any American company that is globally competitive has already converted to metric (Catepillar, Boeing, etc.). There are probably lots of American companies who could compete internationally if their product had been designed and built using metric fasteners, etc., but are hampered by the costs to retool to be able to sell to the rest of the world.

I am still hoping for the metric clock too.

But how metric is US? Suppose a lot of professions deal with it everyday and younger people having more to do with non US countrys?

Here it was quite common to find UNC and UNF on new equipment until the late seventies, particularly on farming implements because English made tractors where market leaders so the system followed the tractors.
