I have a "newbie" question. I have the chance to borrow an 8' disc for food plots. The problem is the disc uses a hydraulic cylinder to raise/lower the disc and I don't have rear hydraulic ports. There's a device that can be used to replace the hydraulic cylinder that turns using a ratchet. What's it called and what do they cost?

Thanks

They may be called by other names but essentially you're thinking about a screw jack. They work like a huge turnbuckle. cost would be dependant on size and weight capacity.
Another option you might look at is a long stroke hydraulic jack if the disk is push to lift.
I remember years ago an old gentleman did just that. Welded mounts and extensions on a 2 or 3 ton hydraulic jack to lift/lower a pull behind disc.

After I posted the question last night I was looking on the internet and found what is called a "ratcheting toplink". They run about $60-75. That would work but doubt I want to stick that much money into something I just borrowing. I'll have to check my local Farm/Fleet for actual cost before I decide.

If you have a removable FEL that leaves the valve on the tractor when removed you may be able to run it off of that. Of course the hoses and connectors might run more that the other option.

A ratcheting toplink is not what you want. If you don’t have rear remotes, that’s not the disk for you.

You want a Ratchet Jack. The TSC stores usually have them for around $50. Ken Sweet

Ah ha, now I understand. The ratcheting toplink (or ratchet jack) would replace the hydraulic cylinder. I wasn’t thinking. Make sure the owner is okay with that before pulling the trigger. Shouldn’t be a big deal, but some people…

i'd got cheapest non destructive rout possible if just borrowing. IE.. see if you can make a bottle jack work. if it is push to lift.. you likely can.. heck.. lift it with a jack and wedge a piec eof lumber in for transport.. then left and remove lumber to drop into ground.. re-crib for return trip.

plenty of ways to skin this cat for free.

Most all wheel discs have a transport rod or bar that when the disc is lifted up to the max, the transport bar can be locked in place on the backside. I have also pulled dozens home by raising them up and chaining the back with a good log chain. Ken Sweet

Ive seen a come-along used on a wheel disc to raise the gangs up for transport. You should be able to "Mcgyver" some sort of lift for occasional use.

yep.. kinda like the lawnmower 3pt lift units that use a small bottle jack as the hyd source, and a rockshaft with lift links, and short rear arms.

Sweettractors was correct! I went to my local Farm/Fleet tonight and bought a Ratchet Jack for about $35. I'm gonna head down to the farm tomorrow and try it on the neighbor's disc. The nice this that it also came with the pins that hold it in place. It's built to replace a standard 20" cylinder and goes out to 29". Should do the trick.

Thanks for all the help guys!

should work.

i have a mower that came with ratchets to adjust the rear wheels, or you could buy the deluxe 300$ upgrade that used a lift cyl..
