What's it cost to have a Briggs 8 hp engine overhauled?

While our power was out we were running on our 4 yr old generator and it started surging, then it got worse, then backfiring, then emitting flame out the exhaust, 6" diameter, then 8-10 long flame, then it quit running.
Has been a good generator, would like to have it overhauled and put back to use. So, what's an overhaul roughly cost? Thanks.

Probably more than a new engine.

Sounds like a timing or valve issue, might have been able to save it. Does it still have compression?

Ditto on the Predator engines. Very reasonably priced and tough.

Look up your Briggs numbers and compare it to this Predator list. See if you can find one that's compatible.

Small engine shops generally charge about $100 just to look at it. If "they" determine you need a crank, rod or piston you'll already be over the cost of a new engine. Even a valve job will get you close to the cost of a new engine these days. And if you go with a repair, you'll still have an old engine. :confused3:

Forgot to mention: DuroMax is another good replacement engine.

This. Likely needs some carburetor work or even just try a new spark plug. Overhaul may have meant tune up? Plus generators can have different crankshaft ends for those that choose to repower.
