Running my buddies JD's while building my house(410 BH and 490 excavator) He and I both ran 'em outta fuel once or twice. Both had broken gauges.
What they'd do is sorta auto-rev much higher for a few seconds and then just quit. No fancy noises or anything. What I'd describe as just runnin' real lean before quitten'.
Didn't prime 'em or bleed 'em to start. Just sprayed a half a can of ether while crankin' and they'd eventually catch.
Now the big Detroit mill in his Diamond Rio was a totally different animal. IMPOSSIBLE to start if run dry without bleeding.
What does this all mean? I don't know enough about diesels to say with certainty but the sounds or ease of restarting probably has to do with the type of pump/injectors/fuel rails used by the different makers..........just a guess.
