what\'s that smell?

this is a new one. I have 2001 tc40 with only 175 hours. last week I was plowing snow and began to noticed a smell. shut down and could trace it (it smells like when you follow a semi truck down a hill and they have been riding their brakes you get that melting smell) I smell it very faintly when getting on the tractor even after it has sat overnight. yesterday I was in the woods tapping maple trees and the more I drove it the more I smelled. I have check all fluids grease fittings all fine. it seems like it is coming from the clucth area. tractor shifts and drives fine. I just don't want to screw it up and with only 175 hours it does not seem like a clutch would be going out already any ideas?

thanks

Re: what\'s that smell?

Is the clutch adjustment set properly. sounds like maybe the clutch is slipping a bit under load.

My other concern would be brakes locked up or dragging. I think the brakes are 'wet', but the load on the clutch may cause some overheating.

Re: what\'s that smell?

Is it possible that you have spilled some oil onto the exhaust or muffler and it is just burning off the final residue? I'd put my nose in the area of the muffler and see if the smell gets stronger. If it smells like burning skin, you're probably too close. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Seriously, I have smelled some "hot" smells from around my exhaust. You also migh check the belts and feel your hydraulic pump on the right side of the engine. If it is hot, maybe your 3PH needs to be adjusted. I found that my lever was out of adjustment and even though my 3PH was as high as it could go, if I pulled up on the lift control handle, the tractor's engine would load and the hydraulic system bypass valve would lift. If that is happening on your tractor, that would be a source of heat build-up. Just feather your lever at the top and see if you hear the engine load up. That will tell you if you need a lever adjustment.

I've also noticed that Hydraulic oil always smells "burned" to me, even when it is fresh and new. If you have a small leak in the hydrostatic cooler in front of the radiator, you would smell the odor. ...but your tractor is a gear version, isn't it?

...okay, I'm out of ideas. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: what\'s that smell?

To check a car or truck for clutch slippage you get it rolling in first, shift to direct ( not overdrive) and floor it. You might be able to do something like this with your tractor. You don't run it with your foot resting on the clutch pedal, do you? Even the lightest pressure on the clutch pedal will cause excessive clutch wear and slippage. I remove my foot completely from the pedal 98% of the time, if you need to feather the pedal on a regular basis you're usually using to high a gear. I end up having to do that occationally on my TN 65 with 8 speeds, I wish I had a 12 or 16 speed. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: what\'s that smell?

In reply to the last two post. the tractor is gear drive and I rest my foot on the foot rest not the pedal. I am going to check the clutch play adjustment that is described in the owners manual this weekend see if that helps. I believe it is a clutch smell not burn off or other

thanks
