This is a pic of the rod on my FEL's left curl cylinder. What is (or was) the purpose of it? Both sides are like that.

hm I think it popped out from cylinder. It acts like a first wiper to clean dirt off and keeping water out as rod moves in and out.

I've seen this before, even on new cylinders. I always assumed it was there as a "bumper"

Same thing on mine. I think they are used during cylinder assembly to assist with seal installation. They always end up at the end if the rod after moving them up to cylinder. It appears they serve no purpose where they end up.

Me too ---- never noticed them before.

I believe that was put on the cylinder when it was orginally painted at the factory and was designed to keep paint and solvents away from the cyllinder seal itself. They are on every hydraulic cylinder of my Kioti CK20HST. most have simply been knocked off during use. They serve no purpose after the cylinder was painted. Hope that helps.

Mine has them too so for whatever reason they were put on, they dont do anything now. The curl cylinders is where I noticed mine also, now I think I will check the others for the same thing.

Yeah, this is the explanation that makes the most sense to me too. You can see the paint on the exposed side and none on the area that would have protected the seal. Thanks to all!
