What's the difference between "Today's Posts" and "New Posts"?????

What's the difference between "Today's Posts" and "New Posts"?????

There are slight differences but it appears to be about 80-90% overlap. Why have two buttons?

IIRC...the former was part of an updated version of the software...before the popularity some message boards would not get visited/posted to on a daily basis...

"New Posts" disappear when "Mark All Read" is pressed. Makes it easy to view.
I never use "Today's Posts" but assumed they would all still show up, read or not.

New Posts is different for everyone and is related to your log in and what YOU have read/participated in. Today's post is calendar driven, whereas a new member of TBN would see New Posts as All posts until they started reading a ton or clicking on Mark All Read in order to get a clean start point.

New posts are all posts that have had activity (someone posting in the thread) since you last viewed it.

Todays posts are ALL posts in chronological order. Thats why in todays posts most of them appear highlighted yellow, but the ones you have already read and nothing new happening....arent highlighted. (at least if ou are using the same version of TBN as me)

Well, thanks for the explanation guys. It still doesn't seem like such a useful function given how huge TBN is these days. I cannot believe anyone really checks all new posts. I wonder if TBN could set it up so that we could limit the forums and see only new or today's posts from the forums we choose to follow. I guess I kinda do that already though on "My Home".

I read the titles of every new post (about two pages of posts). But I only open 5 or 6 each time I log on then mark all read so they stop showing up (until another post made).

I just click on today's post's and look at all of them. I open ones that interest me.

There is a way to display posts from just a selected group of forums rather than posts from all forums. It's a little cumbersome though.

Create a bookmark for a URL that looks something like this:

http ://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/search.php?do=getnew&contenttype=vBForum_Post&include=43,44,45

The numbers separated by commas at the end of the URL represent the TBN forum ID numbers; 43 is Owning/Operating, 44 is Parts/Repairs, and so on. Include as many as you want. Or, instead of "&include=", use "&exclude=" to exclude certain forums from the search result. This will work with either "getnew" for New Posts or with "getdaily" for Today's Posts.

The cumbersome part is finding the forum ID numbers. The only way I know of to get them is to go to each individual forum page (via the FORUMS tab on the top-most banner of any TBN page), then hover over the "+Post New Thread" button. The thread ID should show up at the very end of the URL that the "Post New Thread" button would take you to.

There was a thread a few years ago where Muhammad described this process and I have been using it ever since.
