The definition of this has changed through the years, but generally speaking the Garden tractors are heavier duty machines that can tackle more jobs than mowing. Your 1863 would be a GT. In the old days a true GT would have a horizontal shaft engine and actual frame rails as opposed to a vertical shaft engine and box section stamping for a, "frame." Cub Cadet now classes their shaft driven models as GT's (2500's and 3000's) and the belt drive 1000's as LT's, and some of their bigger belt drive 1500's as SLT's (Super Lawn Tractor).

Thanks again! You are just a wealth of knowledge! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

My FIL has a nice Ford Tractor from I think 1949. He says the clutch is on its last leg. We are going to be taking it apart to repair it and I think you might be the guy to help if we have questions with that! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Fordlords gave a pretty good summary, especially in relation to the CC line up.

I'd also add that with things like larger tires, heavier transmissions (for ground engaging work), and all around build, some GTs sacrifice things like turning radius etc.

But since LTs have to make the price target (else, for lawn cutting you may as well buy a ZTR), it's harder to find quality in an LT than a GT.

Post some pictures in Vintage as you're taking apart that old Ford; all kinds of knowledgable people around here for the the 8Ns and the like! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
